You can buy enhanced HK trigger groups to drop in.

Been wanting 1 of those or similar for quite some time. Should have gotten 1 before the prices rose dramatically. Will be interested in the report.

You need a Booney hat to go with one of those rifles, at least one side turned up. I keep wanting one of those, other expenses keep getting in the way.

I hope you have more luck with scope mounting than I did on my CETME. I never found a claw that would stay in place.

One of the reasons I turned it into a DPMS LAR-308. It was a good trade

If I'm not mistaken, that one has a Picatinny Rail installed on the receiver...

I know where you're coming from though, those STANAG QD mounts were not the most solid mount ever designed...

Yes. It has a picatinny rail welded to to the receiver. Optics ready.

What kind of accuracy do you get out of your work HK?
    1/2 MOA from the MSG90.
    Damn, that’s not bad.

Here it is without the ACOG and with the narrow factory forend below.

Interesting piece.  Count me in the contingent that has never fired one, nor any of the CETME family.  Looking forward to a range report once you're all set up.

Do you like the nickel plated cases for autos???

Im guessing there's no difference, but better to ask than guess.

I like them for that gun because I don’t reload the Nickel cases. So, I don’t mind sacrificing them to that gun.

    Good News/Bad News/Good News

    Good News:
My biggest fear was reliability. I’d read several reviews that spoke of FTF and FTE with various magazines. The good news is that, at least with the 5 round magazine it came with, it functioned and fed reliably through two magazines (5+5).

The bad news is that the 5.5x ACOG I was going to mount on the rifle doesn’t have enough vertical adjustment in the turret to zero the gun. I tried to bore sight the rifle and couldn’t get it centered. Then, I tried to get on paper at 50 yards and was 2 feet low with no more adjustment in the scope. The line of sight vs the line of bore is just too great for the ACOG.
So, the scope I bought the rifle for won’t work. I have a couple 1x, 3-9x, and 3.5-14x scopes on the shelf, including a few red dot. But, none of those cover the range of optic I intended for the rifle.
I do have a Midway gift card and I’m thinking about spending it on a Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x scope which will again cover the power range I see for this rifle. It ain’t the greatest Leupold. But, won’t hurt the bank with the gift card and would serve the accuracy potential I assume for the rifle. It’s to be a shorter range hunting/nostalgia firearm. Not a match or long range rifle.

    Thoughts on my scope consideration?

The other good news is that this rifle doesn’t chew up and destroy brass like my MSG-90 does. Makes its pretty dirty, but doesn’t ding the shoulder and flatten the case mouth line the HK. It does, however, sling brass 8 yards to my 1 O’Clock. 2 yards short on the MSG-90. At least it’s relatively unscathed.

    So..........scope thoughts?

Thoughts on the scope?  Its a Leupold so you know it is quality gear, even if not their higher end.  As long as it meets your needs for distance I would consider it fine

Try the scope, I can't see it not working, and the lifetime guarantee should keep you in business.

The Leupold will work but no chance of shimming the ACOG?
  • ZeeZee Posts: 28,411 Senior Member
In the interim, I mounted a throw away 3-9x kit scope that comes on Remington 700 ADLs. Probably made by Bushnell.
Will shoot it tomorrow at 50 and 100 to see if the accuracy potential warrants a new scope.
Had to remove the cheek rest to see through the scope. Being lower than the ACOG.

Not with their mounting system. That I’m aware of.

    Cheap scope mounted.

I also took the factory brake off as soon as I got the gun and mounted a Miculek Brake I had on the shelf. Seems to work well.
If I get a sub 2” group at 100 yards with any of my ammo choices tomorrow while using the cheap  3-9x Bushnell scope on it...........I’ll likely leave the Bushnell or consider a different higher power scope.
I’ll be surprised and impressed if I do.
If I get a 3-4” group at 100 yards using the 3-9x Bushnell and any of my ammo, I’ll consider getting the 1.5-4x Leupold sight it in a 50 yards and consider it a short range hunting/nostalgia gun.

    Sound fair?

I think that's a good plan.  Those are pretty realistic expectations for the gun and supporting equipment.

First off, that kit scope I put on the rifle sucks yam sacks!!!  Cloudy. Blurred. Absolute crap!  Don’t know who made it. But........damn.

Anyway, I set the target up at 50 yards to get on paper and shoot the first group with the 3 types of ammo I had with me.

Then moved the target to 100 yards and fired some more groups.

The trigger is crazy heavy. But, it’s workable. Maybe not for tiny groups. But, you can make holes in paper.
    Green Marks - 50 yrds
    Red Marks - 100 yrds

The winner was the A-Max at 1.5” group @100
Tactical Bonded came in at 2.25” @ 100.
    Ballistic Tip grouped 2.75” @ 100.

Not a tack driver, but I had no malfunctions.
I’ll probably look into getting that 1.5-4x Leupold. Lighter weight and nothing I’d hunt with this rifle would require much more magnification.

Yep, give me the A-max!  Waterline is spot on or the vertical dispersion is about nothing.  I imagine that with a better trigger the right to left spread will tighten up...Better scope sure won't hurt.
    You have a winner there!

Once I get a new scope, I’ll probably try the 165gr Tactical Bonded again. This gun doesn’t really rate for Match ammo. So, I’d just as soon run the bonded as not many guns like it and this will be a sub 200 yards gun.
