It's sad when nine people die tragically, but the very next day a USAF plane was shot down in Afganistan killing all five on board!! Not a word on national news about five real hero's dying!!
    God Bless them

These kinds of accidents remind you just how quickly it all can end.  No matter how much talent or money you have or don't have, nobody is immune.

As far as Kobe in particular, his death hits pretty close to home in both space and time.  He was only a year younger than me.  His daughter who perished was 13; my daughter is about to turn 13.  He went to Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania at the same time that I went to Wissahickon High School, and the two were a regular, cross-town sports rivalry.

We did a pretty good number on his school when I was in track and wrestling, but it goes without saying that their basketball program was superior the years that he was there and well beyond.  Crazier still, one of my upperclassman found footage of him playing at our high school when Wissahickon hosted the regional tournament.  This was the year after I graduated/Kobe's senior year.  It's just so strange to watch now.
