We once had a cat that my wife would send into the vet for a "dip" when its fleas got too bad (WAAY before "Advantage" and similar treatments). They had to sedate the cat, it was that wild/agitated/crazy/whatever. Heck, it took 3 people to hold that cat down to apply flea powder - which is why we stopped trying!

Back when I was a lot younger, a flour sack was used to apply flea powder to the cats with fleas. You poured some flea powder into the sack, grabbed the cat by the scruff of the neck and over the hind legs, and stuffed them in the flour sack(two person job), and held the top of sack closed and shook sack and cat. Then you opened sack on floor with opening AWAY from you and cat exited at Warp 9 and accelerating. Might sound cruel, but it avoided getting scratched and bit by the cat.

Now why in tarnation did we think of something like that? Sure would have beat holding the poor thing down the one time we tried. Wife saw that the cat's lips were turning blue, we promptly released it and never tried that again.

I've always thought that what I have for range reports are of interest to no one.  I go out in the boonies with my 10/22 and Mark III a lot, and mostly just chase an empty soda can all over the place for a hundred rounds or so.  The purpose being to keep my trigger pull as smooth as possible, and my costs down.  When I do so, I will also empty a single magazine of .40 or whatever into a paper target to ensure that I'm doing more than just having fun with the .22s.
Any day at the range is of interest to me.  Why cans, how about more interesting targets.  Slow motion of a .22 HP going through a marshmallow would get 10 views from me and a lot of giggles.    She pics of the desert are always good.  Maybe we can start a thread on just sooting outings for the heck of it...
Not a bad idea, but I don't own a video camera, nor a cell phone for that matter.  As for interesting targets, I'm an expert at making paper target stands out of PVC and 2x2s.  I have lots of steel targets that I seldom use any more because they are heavy to lug around.  The other shooting I really like is when I have someone going with me that likes it too, is taking one of my 870s out and shooting hand thrown clays.  I have an assortment of hand throwers that do everything from long range to doubles.  Throwing the clays is as much fun as shooting them.
Great!  Can you show me some of those stands? (Separate thread!)   I’ve been meaning to make some portable ones since the owner of my club is having health issues and our permanent target stands are wrecked...
Sure, but I'll have to dig one out of the back of my truck and take photos first.

I'll try my hand at computer art and see if I can draw up a diagram to make a stand here, but that might take some time.  But I figure with just photos of one of my stands, most everybody here will be able to make their own.  My stands are all pretty much the same, cheap and easy peasy.

Yea, but a skunk WILL spray if you surprise it on your porch at nite and yell "HOLY CRAP!" at the top of your lungs instead of creeping quietly away...

That is very similar to mine.  I use long drywall screws to put cross members on the 2x2s, and don't put a cross member on the PVC.  I do put end caps on the PVC to keep them from filling with dirt and gravel, and I drill holes in the ends of the PVC for tent stakes to anchor the stand so it won't blow over in wind.  The most difficult part of the build is finding a large enough piece of cardboard for attaching the targets, which I do with a staple gun, and the same for the cardboard.

So that is MY reason I now visit occasionally but find myself frequenting other forums nowadays. But I'd like to maybe reverse that trend.  Any ideas?  I'd like to, as a group figure out a way to go back to the days this the premier source of gun information on the web.

Let's try to keep it positive, looking for suggestions that maybe the mods can bring to the mothership to increase interest?  Specially interested in older members that are not participating too much anymore.

This is not going to be positive, but I will be open. You know those self riotous preachers that condemn pornography but come to find out are porn fiends? You constantly condemn the political forum, vow to not go on the political forum, but where are you? On the political forum. How about you stay away from that? And while you are at it, how about keeping political discussion out of the other forums?

That would be a nice start.

Funny you mention that.....I just got up and was thinking a shower (glass enclosed) with the cat might be interesting for both of us. She's getting old and cranky and needs to lighten up. Plus I don't really wake up until I've had a shower.

Taking a shower with a cat would be like taking a shower with a psychopathic weed whacker, with claws. I'd recommend rethinking that course of action! :D

So I just reread this.  Are you suggesting I’m the sole reason traffic is down in this forum?
  • JermanatorJermanator Senior Member Posts: 16,244 Senior Member
Not at all. There are multiple issues that is keeping traffic down... First one is that this place has been moved so many times and all our stuff has been lost so many times. So it is like taking a whole set of encyclopedias, chucking them in the trash, and rewriting them every few years or so... a forum is a member created base of information and it keeps getting erased over and over again. It kills us in the traffic and search results. A forum with several more years of posts has an advantage over us.

Deleting long time members and all their posts isn't helpful. All of CPJ's stuff on machining and gunsmithing? That is gun forum gold! Guess what? it got deleted. Alpha and all his thousands of posts (remember that posts are what makes the body of a forum), plus the threads he started, plus all the responses the rest of us wrote are now all deleted.

We are also a bunch of old farts and quite frankly are intolerant. At 49 years old, I tend to be on the younger side of the member age spectrum here. We aren't bringing in any newer/younger blood. And if we do, they usually get fed up with our old crotchety crap eventually and wander away.

Maybe if people didn't disappear in the night like they do in Russia, China or N. Korea, and leave no evidence trail or no hint why might make a difference. From my point of view there is a repressive environment here in other ways too. Removing the Politics discussion didn't work 2 years ago and constant implied threats of banishment doesn't help. My participation is less too, because I have to reread almost everything 3 times to make sure it doesn't sound like an unintended "threat" to anyone before I hit the post button. If there wasn't a huge desire on my part to remain a member for the value of the information available and the friends that are here, I would self-delete too.

I've surely drifted away over the last 5 years, or so. I've been around for nearly 20 years.
I've probably added 30% to my collection, haven't shared.  I now have a 300 yard range out back.
Why.  Well, all the negativity from the curmudgeon crew, for one.  The constant harassing of anyone new, and any question that was deemed "stupid" by the geriatric judge and jury.  It's not something I want to be a part of.  Should have been nipped long ago.
I think the 2A forum is toxic.  It's arguments spill over into everywhere else, contaminating the whole place.
This is a gun forum.  Cut the crap, and let's talk about guns, the outdoors, hunting, and other common interests.

    I agree.

Ok, so let's try to do a quick summary.  We are an older group which has been there, done that and has wore out dozens of T-Shirts in the process.  It's getting kind of boring just talking amongst us and we absolutely need new blood and topics for discussion.

So how about if every member commits to bringing ONE new member that they think would be a positive addition to the group.  Someone who is actually interested in FIREARMS and the outdoors.  The rest of the curmudgeons here will commit to treat them kindly and with respect and not put down anyone in a condescending manner even when we disagree with them?  Let's repurpose the energy to civilized discussion, educating others less experienced and being open minded to all new information even if you personally decide it's not for you.

Maybe we can actually make some new friends in the process and revive this site?

Every member you bring should be personally introduced by the existing member, and speak about how you know them and their firearms/outdoor interest, and maybe ushered into some topics of discussion that we know we can all enjoy discussing.
