I guess the answer to the question would/could be region specific. Here in East TN it could easily be .22LR and that's what I'd go with. From limb chikkin to deer, it will do just fine. And if you know some rudimentary anatomy, then you can take down any 'uninvited guests' easily, too.

I took this thread to mean, YOUR most useful cartridge. As in, what do you use the most and does the most for you. 

Not a hypothetical all purpose cartridge for the US or the world. 

What do I use the most.

Rats! I liked where this thread was going.

12 gauge. I have a 20, had a 16 but the 12 is the most useful. Bunnies, duck, turkey, squirrel and upland with one "chambering"..
