I guess the answer to the question would/could be region specific. Here in East TN it could easily be .22LR and that's what I'd go with. From limb chikkin to deer, it will do just fine. And if you know some rudimentary anatomy, then you can take down any 'uninvited guests' easily, too.

12 gauge. I have a 20, had a 16 but the 12 is the most useful. Bunnies, duck, turkey, squirrel and upland with one "chambering"..
