Savage 110 Precision?

JKPJKP Posts: 2,704 Senior Member
Thinking about ordering a Savage 110 Precision in .308. I don't have a .308 bolt gun so i need to fill that gap. This rifle looks to be good to go out of the box at around $1100 (plus rings and a scope of course).

There's not a lot of real world reviews on this rifle yet - any thoughts regarding it or  alternatives that are chassis based?

Might consider the 6.5 CM variant but the .308 wouldn't involve getting tooled up to load a different cartridge.

If I order the rifle I'd likely add a Leupold VX-3i LRP 4.5-14x50mm.

I had a buddy that owned one. It was a good, accurate shooter until after about the 3rd round when the bbl would start to heat up, then it would throw patterns. Not a target gun, but fine for hunting unless you're a terrible shot and need multiple follow ups 😆

No experience with the rifle. But, regarding the scope.
I recently purchased a Leupold VX3i 6.5-20 with CCH reticle. Mounted it on my heavy .308 Winchester bolt gun. Liked it so much, I bought another for one of my ..260 Remingtons.
Strongly recommend the upgrade in power and to the CCH reticle.

You beat me to my next question regarding the reticle! It looks awful busy - I assume you have good results using the reticle rather than dialing?

Owned a Savage or a Savage 110 Precision? I can't imagine the 110 Precision barrel heating up after 3 rounds enough to impact accuracy...

When we switched to the H-58/59 reticle several years ago, I freaked out with the grid system. But, it grew on me and I absolutely LOVE it now.
The CCH reticle is about as good without paying the Horus royalty fee.

Ordered the rifle, but in 6.5 CM. I want the .308 bolt action to be more "traditional" so that's still on the list. Plus the 6.5 has a 24" barrel which to me at least is more appropriate on a chassis rifle.

Going with the 6.5-20 CCH as recommended for glass... I think this will be my first scope with mils.

That should be a pretty sweet package.

When we shoot distance, my buddy with MOA turrets and TMR reticle can’t keep up with us. He runs out of turret and reticle. Resorting to holding up in space.

With Mil/Mil, you’ll be able to dial some and hold some if you want and still reach a mile.

I had a Savage Model 10 Ashbury Precision for a short time. That gun could SHOOT, but I found the chassis that utilized AR components to be unwieldy and awkward so I ditched for a more traditionally configured Tikka T3x CTR.

If this rifle had been on the market then, I probably would have bought it. I doubt that you'll be disappointed by your choice.

Remember the Nissan X-Terra ads with the tag line "Everything you need; nothing you don't"?

That's kinda where the Savage 110-series guns are.  They do a MUCH better job of delivering an accuracy package on the cheap.  They are a soul-less, mass-produced rifle, but it's often that whole "built by robots" thing that leads to consistent accuracy gun to gun.

I like your idea of a 4.5-14, or something in that range (or 3-18).  I value a lower bottom end more than the higher top end for ability to get on target quickly and stay on it, and have found that life much over about 16X usually requires REALLY good light and a REALLY steady rest.

Just dry firing and what not this thing seems to have potential. The MDT chassis is solid all around. I'm certainly no expert on chassis systems but this one doesn't seem to have any weak points.

Compared to my Ruger precision rifle which is a really good shooter this chassis is much more solid. It takes more effort to adjust length of pull and comb height but once it's adjusted it's solid. Absolutely no wiggle in anything.

I have contemplated building a Specialty Pistol in the past. Using that chassis.

Leupold VX3i 6.5-20 FFP with CCH reticle per Zee's recommendation. First impression suggests just what I expected - typical Leupold quality. The reticle isn't as busy as I thought it would be.

Sharp eye on the level. Yes, I shoot long guns left handed as I am left eye dominant.

Seekins Precision. This is the second or third set of their rings I've used. I really like them and they are made in the USA.
