Sunday - Gun Day (300yrds with a .22lr)

ZeeZee Posts: 28,409 Senior Member
Took the boy to the range today for some .22lr work.
Started at 25 yards to confirm zero. Then moved him to 50 and then 75 and finally 100 yards.

We were packing up after the 100 yard line and then I thought........what the Hell!
”You want to try 300 yards?”
”Sure.”
I take a few shots and figure out the hold. Tell him, put the bottom of the steel at the bottom of the scope picture and favor left.
He gets up and after a slight adjustment, starts hammering the steel. Over and over again!!

It was on sale when I got it. Not my favorite. But it was cheap and it’s effective.

    Good job and nice rifle!

It's doable as long as wind is low and target is reactive enough to show hits. Once you manage to master the round's drop, you can enjoy shooting at so extreme range for that cartridge.

Doing it with iron sights is also quite a challenge. My CZ 452 Standard with its military Mauser-style rear sight is great for such shooting.

It is pretty fun. No recoil or report. Just shooting.

22LR at long range is fun. Until a gusty wind kicks in. I once fired 19 shots at a 110 yard distant pdog before I hit it. Cased that rifle and I don't think I've fired it since. Wind in the Rockies and the plains is almost a constant. That's a shame, because it's a superbly accurate 10/22T (my squirrel rifle) that I shot a lot in Louisiana, but it's next to useless in Colorado.

Wish it was different. I have 10 magazines and a buttload of ammo for it.

I just ordered a new Ruger BX Trigger for it.
2.5lbs gotta be better than the factory 6lb trigger.

My two youngest can consistently hammer steel with their .22's at 100 yards.  My son briefly tried 300 yards but we could not tell where the POI was.  I need a stronger spotting scope.

Looks like a fun day. Good for you guys. Looks to be one heck of a nice day also. I hope you barbequed later on. It just seems fitting.

For .22 holes in paper @ 300 yards you'll need a GOOD spotting scope. My Leupold will do up to 220 yards in an overcast sunless day, but for longer ranges and more sunlight you're talking about something WAY above 500 bucks.

Awesome- back in the day we read about Elmer Keith and his amazing long distance shot with the .44. We tried to replicate it with everything and learned a lot about Kentucky windage and hold over with handguns, and rifles of every caliber.
Lots of fun.  A target on the dirt( can see the bullet kick up dirt) is a great instructor.
