Using a condom to prevent getting moisture/water in the barrel can be traced back to WWII and the beach landings on islands in the Pacific, and definitely in the Normandy beach landings on D-Day. There's pictures out there of that, but I'm not interested in looking them up. I did look up one link, though, of the military use of condoms for other than their intended purpose. Using them to protect water intrusion into the rifle bore was just one such use.
