Info on Colt Frontier Scout?

smokeater35smokeater35 Posts: 2 New Member
I recently acquired a pistol that has me a bit baffled. It is a Colt Frontier Scout .22 LR, standard four and three-quarter inch barrel, with fixed sights, blue bbl, and what seems to be a bright finished light alloy receiver. While knowing an approximate value would be interesting the REAL mystery may make that impossible. I have gone over every square millimeter of this gun, fully and carefully disassembled it, and have found NO SERIAL NUMBER. Not a MISSING or REMOVED serial number. It was never there. The gun appears to have all other appropriate markings ("COLT SINGLE ACTION FRONTIER 22LR" on bbl) and proof marks. Aside from some barrel wear it's in excellent condition right down to sharp, perfect screw heads so even the seemingly impossible (serial number wearing off) seems unlikely. No, I'm not stupid, just completely baffled. If anyone has any ideas (please, no alien abduction theories) or information please, if possible, email me at [email protected] or reply here (though I spend most of my time on work computers and will be hard to log in).

Thank you for any help you all can offer!

Thank you kindly, NN! I've meant to join for years. It's an absolute pleasure to find myself in the company of intelligent, like minded people whom I don't find myself trying to rationalize gun ownership to. As one of my favorite sayings goes (and it seems to apply so well to the media fed anti-gun zealots): Don't try and teach a pig to sing, it wastes your time and annoys the pig.

    Smoke, welcome to the forum.

Here is a pic of my Colt New Frontier, 22 l.r. and 22 mag.; the l.r. cylinder is in. The serial number is pictured in the second photo. I realize that you said "Frontier" and mine is "New Frontier", but I hope this helps.

There's no such thing as having too much ammo, unless you're on fire or trying to swim!

    welcome,

    pictures would be nice.

buying used guns is like buying a box of chocolates....you never know what youre going to get.

ive never seen a colt SAA 22 w/o the s/n. i could believe a prototype, but they usually had some type of number to track it.

value depends on condition and completeness as with all guns. if you check the gun auction/selling site you should be able to find some comps.

    Welcome!

They've been putting serial numbers on them since they started making them in '57. The list of numbers/years is here:

If this is the gun you have the serial number should be right in front of the trigger guard/grip frame. If it's not there I would think someone removed it somehow. May not have been anything illegal at the time if it was done in the early 60's.

I have an identical Colt to the one described as having a blue steel barrel and cylinder but an aluminum-colored frame. Bought it new in San Diego, CA in 1957. Have been wondering if it has turned into a collectors item.

    I would suspect it's either a fake or a lunch-box gun.
Concealed carry is for protection, open carry is for attention.

It sounds like a gun that someone polished so well, he did mention the frame was in the white, most likely they ended up polishing off the serial number.

If he polished it with a steel wire brush.

Didn't Ruger and possibly Colt make an aluminum framed .22 single action?? "Bearcat" comes to mind.
I have a Frontier Scout with cylinders for .22 LR and .22 mag. Walnut grips, serial #104xxxF. stamped on the frame in front of the trigger guard. Blued steel frame.

I have this same model Frontier Scout. I bought it in 1957 in San Diego, CA. Was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could get parts for it or give me the name of a good gunsmith that might be willing to work on it.

    What is the problem?

Mine is from 1969 and the stamping is not heavy so would probably be easy to polish the numbers off if one was not careful.

I left it in the care of a nephew who, I believe, wanted to fan the hammer. When I pull the hammer back, there is some slack in the alignment of the cylinder to the barrel. Would really like to get this corrected as It's a nice little item.
