    Hopkins and Allen ---------2&5/8 chamber

If ever there was a gun that was being too quiet. What's the story??? When did you get it and how??? Do you roll yer own shells???
    ?????????????????????????
My Uncle gave it to me some years ago with an old box of paper shotgun shells. As far as I know he did not hunt and where he got it I do not know. Those shells were 2&3/4.
My Uncle did live in some fairly rural areas of Pa so maybe that is why he had it or it may have been Grandpa's gun----there is no older family member to ask.

I shot a couple of those paper shells and posted same back on one of the earlier versions of this forum. I was summarily chewed out by a knowledgeable forum member because of the potential of a short chamber. I measured and he was right.

Maybe roll crimp shells that don't open up to a full 2 & 3/4" could be procured and tested in a modern gun to confirm fired length.  Light payload at low velocity would be prudent in respect to the age of the gun.

    What about a “shorty” ( 1 ¾” ) 12 gauge mini-shell.

That might work OK; the issue was that the longer shell (2&3/4) would create excessive chamber pressure when the shell unfolded when fired.

Two schools about that but old gun, best to be safe.
