Enzo, I think you know my reaction without me having to post a word. I'm very proud and pleased for you, and I know you will give it a good home. Looking forward to your range report.
Gene, the 88 was also chambered in .284 and .358. .284 production didn't start until '63 and continued until the model was taken out of production.in '73. The .358 was put into production sometime in the 50s and discontinued in '62, I think. It's the most desirable, and expensive, of all the chamberings.
There were also carbine version made in 60s and early 70s in every chambering except 358. I have one in .308.
But, back to the OP. I know you have wanted one of these for a long time, and have high regard for this model. Now you just need to go get the other 3 chamberings.

I knew this one would put a smile on your face and I can assure you I will give it the best home possible and this one for sure is getting passed on to the kids (now I have to figure out which one). Getting the other 3 is a high dare brother. The again it only took me 40 years to replace the one I hunted with with the right one!
Enzo, if you EVER get a chance to get one of these in .243, get it. You will absolutely fall in love with it. The one I have is probably my favorite rifle of all those I've ever owned.

WOW!! How'd I miss this post!! Very nice rifle!! I've worked on a few, never owned one, but have always liked them!! I have a bunch of parts rat holed for 88's if you ever, which I doubt, need parts!!

That is indeed high praise! And just like that the search is on... I'd love to get one of those, hope the right one comes along!

Thank you sir! This one is in fine shape, inside and out and the only flaws on the stock are a quick wipe of Howard's away from becoming non existent! (Have I told you that I mentally thank you EVERY time I use that tip on an older gun?!?!?!?)

When I got my 88 I found that I had a pre-64 action in a post-64 stock...because the original owner had shortened the stock to the point that nobody but the original owner could shoot it...after his passing, his son dropped it I,to the wood it wears now ..I have been trying, unsuccessfully so far, to find the proper pre-64 stock for it...would you by chance have one lying around?

NICE. A lot of them were in .308 and .243, I guess because of the shorter action? A handy gun.
That is correct. The original one was also .308, and funny enough earlier this year I was complaining that I find myself without a handy .308 hunting weight rifle 😂
You cannot go wrong with that cartridge. And to have one in such a memorable and classic platform.........nirvana.

Sorry, I don't have stock, mostly action parts, extractors, springs and such!

That’s gonna be a tough one. I’ll keep an eye out fir one on eBay for you. Never seen one on GB but you never know.
She weighs it at a svelt 7lb 1oz so I ordered light Talley rings and I have a 1.75-6 or 2.5-8 (don’t remember which) Leupold squirreled away that going in them. She should stay safely under 8lbs total when I’m done, keeping her light and nimble in the field. Rings will be here in two weeks so I’ll probably take her out for a spin to see what she does with irons.

Better get some wax on it if you're going back out in the wet to wait for that deer.
Lucky you.
