Casual Observation

I spent a chilly Saturday AM window shopping at the local pawn shops and LGS.
1ST) just how gullible do some folks think the general population is? Perhaps more so than I realize.
Pawn shop employee, with a straight face, tried to convince me that a run-of-the-mill Remington 700 SPS 270W ($700) was a collector's item. "You know that Remington went out of business, don't you". How many thousands of those are floating around?
2ND) Second hand 300WM, numerous brands, some with optics probably are worth more or equal to the rifle, seem to be on every street corner. Last year it seemed like 7 RM were every where.
3) When you have trouble finding 30/06 and 270W ammo, that my friends is a shortage.
Ok, carry on with your day.

Had a co-worker once tell me the story of how he was showing a 5-shot Smith to a customer who stared fixedly at the open cylinder for several moments before the light of (ahem) "understanding" broke on his face when he exclaimed "OH! I Get it! Five in here and one in the chamber!"

I can't be too hard on the multitudes that I had to sort out on 9mm Luger versus the various European designations of .380 or Largo, or .38 Special versus Super versus S&W, but I can almost see California's newer, idiotic all-ammo-behind-the-counter law being a blessing in that regard - - at least there's SOME chance of them getting the right stuff.
The ignorant, mechanically inept, Hollywood-misinformed, and just plain dumb walk among us, and unfortunately, they seem to frequent gun shops a lot. I never got QUITE so cynical as to assume they were the majority of what walked in the door, but there were definitely days. . .
So in answer to your question - VERY. It seems we're about to start a third Obama term after all. . .

Gun control laws make about as much sense as taking ex-lax to cure a cough.
