Casual Observation

I spent a chilly Saturday AM window shopping at the local pawn shops and LGS.

1ST) just how gullible do some folks think the general population is? Perhaps more so than I realize.
Pawn shop employee, with a straight face, tried to convince me that a run-of-the-mill Remington 700 SPS 270W ($700) was a collector's item. "You know that Remington went out of business, don't you".  How many thousands of those are floating around?

2ND) Second hand 300WM, numerous brands, some with optics probably are worth more or equal to the rifle, seem to be on every street corner. Last year it seemed like 7 RM were every where.

3) When you have trouble finding 30/06 and 270W ammo, that my friends is a shortage.

Ok, carry on with your day.

You folks have much different shopping experiences than I do, I have not met a .300 Win Mag I did not like yet, find one with a Leupold and be happy, those don't last long around me. Yeah, .270's are rare :D, I hope your response was pithy. You are correct on #3.

I was standing next to a very small young lady who told the counter guy that she wanted to buy her 1st gun and that she wanted to carry it but she never shot or owned a gun the guy handed her a $2500.00 1911 45 ACP I handed her my business card and told her to call me and dont buy that gun that there are many better choices when she called I let her talk to my friend who is a female and a shooting instructor I know she ended up with a 9mm of some sort and was happy that I stopped the idiot behind the counter

According to Forgotten Weapons, MOST firearms manufacturers file bankruptcy at one time or another.  I can't remember if this is true only in the US or all firearms makers all over.

Had one customer back in the day handling an O/U double ask me to confirm if it held two rounds.

Had a co-worker once tell me the story of how he was showing a 5-shot Smith to a customer who stared fixedly at the open cylinder for several moments before the light of (ahem) "understanding" broke on his face when he exclaimed "OH!  I Get it!  Five in here and one in the chamber!"

See also my recent thread - including the responses - on the NatGeo Bonnie & Clyde documentary.

I can't be too hard on the multitudes that I had to sort out on 9mm Luger versus the various European designations of  .380 or Largo, or .38 Special versus Super versus S&W, but I can almost see California's newer, idiotic all-ammo-behind-the-counter law being a blessing in that regard - - at least there's SOME chance of them getting the right stuff.

The ignorant, mechanically inept, Hollywood-misinformed, and just plain dumb walk among us, and unfortunately, they seem to frequent gun shops a lot.  I never got QUITE so cynical as to assume they were the majority of what walked in the door, but there were definitely days. . .

So in answer to your question - VERY.  It seems we're about to start a third Obama term after all. . .

This year has brought a LOT of new shooters to the table.  I have literally had to explain that the pointy end if bullet fires AWAY from you.  More than once.  New world,  indeed

Prime example. The picture below was taken at the shop that I used to smith at. The manager who is dumber than a box of rocks and beyond any form of greed that I've ever experienced is taking over ownership. This in his mind is "fair".

I think I need a new pair of glasses.  That looks like someone is trying to sell 150 rounds of 5.56 ammo for $179.95.   I must be reading it wrong.

People are paying over $200 for a single brick of SP or SM primers. Not even kidding,  1000 cci #400 can net you over 200 smackers on gunbroker. These are auctions WITH BIDS, not just people putting up the usual gouger hopes and dreams

I have seen it and I'm just glad that I stocked up before all this mess not as stocked as I would like to be but a heck of a lot better than some and sure wish I would have thought about casting a couple years ago
