Price Check: Ruger GP-100 3" .44 Special

shotgunshooter3shotgunshooter3 Posts: 6,112 Senior Member
Local shop has a used GP-100 3" .44 Special for sale. It was a rental gun, which is obvious, but also I doubt it was rented that often as an oddball handgun at a private club. OUTSTANDING trigger, like oddly nice.

They're asking $700, which seems steep to me, but new ones are going online for that price (when you can find them). I'm thinking more in the $500-$550 range. MSRP on a new .357 is $800.

Thoughts?

New like you said 800.00 on GB fornan3 inch. Normally a range gun I would think 5ish but low round count, i would say 6-700 the way things are today.

In today's market anything in the 600 range I'd call a win.  If it wasn't for "2020" I'd say 500 or pass. But with the current situation if you don't buy it, someone else will.  Buyers just don't really have the leverage currently

I’ve been actively looking for a 3” 44 spl for a while now to no avail. Had been concentrating on a S&W 69 Combat but recently had the opportunity to try Elk Creeks GP 100 and really liked it. Can’t find one of those ether!
Closest I’ve come is an older S&W 696 but it carries a $1200 price tag.
all that to say if it’s in nice shape you should grab it. Your unlikely to do much better.

As long as it’s tight and looks in decent shape that’s not out of line nowadays.

Seems steep to me. I agree with your assessment of $500'ish. If you want to overspend with today's market it's probably not a bad deal. But being that it is a want and not a need, I would hold off.

I don't know about the price, but I wouldn't like to own one in .44 Special.  That's an odd caliber for such a fine revolver; just not "versatile" like a .44 Mag would be. You're limited in what you can do with it.  I've got a Redhawk that will shoot .44 Mag bullets and .44 Special as well.  Kinda like buying a .38 Special which is a fine handgun, but if you can get a .357 at the same price, unless you've got a thing for .38s. then why go for the lesser cartridge..

I like them. They rarely have issues except for the two that I saw in the same week that had the barrel indexed slightly off. They were both brand new.

Looked it up in the Blue Book. Seems they've been discontinued (2017-2019) 98% = $565 + $30 for 44spl + $30 with adj sights = $625.00  Kinda want one too.

Well, for reasons of my advanced age even after reading the OP, for some reason I thought the revolver was a Redhawk frame rather than a GP frame.  Even though it's clearly stated that it's a GP100. Accounting for my rather uninformed post.  Neat revolver in that size gun if you want a heavy-caliber handgun w/out going to a heavier-frame heavier mass Redhawk.

Haven't been back to the shop yet. If it's still there after the holidays I may offer $600 cash and see what happens.

You see my link for the new one? I would offer $550 OTD.

Saw that. I honestly think they'll laugh me out with $550, but it may be worth an attempt. We'll see if I'm still thinking about it after the holiday.

$600 OTD would be my tops. Show them the link for the new one, without tax. You know that don't have close to that into it. I would walk otherwise. Can't scam a scammer!

I would think very hard about getting the one with the "oddly outstanding trigger" if it will be a shooter and not a safe queen- I own no safe queens and every firearm I own has "character marks"

Have to laugh at "offers" these days.  It's a sellers market.  You can take the low ball offers and tell them to pound sand. With the current gun market,  if you want it and it's fair,  buy it.  Don't try low balling dealers that are likely paying bigger margins than 8 months ago just to have inventory.

I laugh these old school "hagglers" out my door daily.  That game is done for the time being.  If you want it, buy it.

Or, those dealers can go pound sand when someone scoffs at the inflated price. Especially when a new item can be had for the same price.

If it can be had new for a lower price,  why haven't you bought it already?

While I agree on principle that it’s a sellers market I’ve also seen GREAT classic guns languish on shelves and racks because some dealers are pricing handguns that are not “hot” nowadays WAY out of line.  Quite a few very nice 1911s are dying on the vine because all the new shooters want Glocks, M&Ps, Canicks and Taurus G model guns.

No one cares about nice hunting rifles for the most part either.  That market has not taken off like high cap handguns and CC handguns in general.  And while there was a momentary crazy rush on ARs, the magazines are still cheap to buy because most new shooters think 1 or 2 thirty rounders and they are good to go, mostly because most of these folks will never even fire those guns, ever...  And they can’t get any ammo for them anyway.

Recently I saw 2 brand new Ronins locally on sale for $699 each and not moving, and when I asked the manager of the store why he said he couldn’t give them away.  I almost bought one on principle alone but I can’t for the life of me justify another 1911 when I’m not even carrying/shooting the ones I already own.

I said same price. I am not the one looking to buy it.

When I opened that link it's $799.95, then you have to figure transfer fees and whatnot.

That's probably a wee bit more than $700.  Just sayin'...
    Meh.

It was $699 when I posted it. Had it in my cart to figure tax and it came to $741.

No doubt. Just pointing out how the price has changed in a few days.

As Milehighshooter said: seller's market, largely. And capitalism: supply and demand.
    Meh.

    GunNut,

I turned and burned a collection of 24 out of 25 total custom hunting rifles in about 6 weeks.  The last one left if a 7x57 AI. Nice rifles and shotguns are flying off the shelves pretty fast.  I was recently sent 12 sxs shotguns in various gauges I thought I would sit on for months.  2 weeks,  for $900 TriStar's.

I dunno, maybe there are a ton of dealers out there marking up 100%, but I ain't one of them,  and the lowball offers these days just rub me raw. Same with sellers wanting above retail for me to buy their gun thinking I'm going to try and sell guns for literally a few bucks profit. My company as a whole took a stance to take lower margins just for the sole reason of having actual inventory.  I'm paying extra and selling for the same as before  just to get inventory and try to keep up with demand.

It must be different in other places. I haven't been to the city to see what they have but locally the only ar I have seen on the shelf are high end $1500 ones. Pretty rare to find a used rifle and never a classic. The owner of my lgs I deal with told me a distributor called him and gave him a list of things available and asked him what he wanted, he said all of them. I have never seen his store so bare. He did get me a S&W m and p 22.

Oh I was not talking specifically about you.  I know YOUR pricing is more than fair.  I'm talking in general and mostly about what I'm seeing in my area.  I would guess the market for hunting/sporting arms to be more robust out west.  Here on the east coast hunting opportunities and places to shoot are dwindling fast so I find all sorts of great shotguns and hunting rifles languishing on racks at the LGSs because folks are dumping tons of old family owned guns (grandpa's old shotgun and deer rifle) to fund the buying of modern SD guns which the stores can't keep in stock.  Just the other day I was training someone that was talking about selling grandpa's old heirloom .38 that he carried through his service decades in the PD in favor of a freakin Taurus G2!  I had all I could do to not punch him...

Well that revolver is an amazing piece of work by Ruger! You should just buy the darn thing. You will forget what you paid long before the smile on your face goes away from shooting that 44 special. Just buy it! You won’t regret it. Sako put 5 through mine and fell in love with it. I had to dang near pry it out of his hands🤣
