My latest project

It's not a gun but it was fun to build. When my sister moved to a small town in western Pa. she complained about all the hicks in this town. I was reading one book in a series of Appalachian fork lore (Fox Fire) when I found a chapter on banjos and dulcimers. Low and behold there was a "John Hicks Appalachian fretless banjo". I had to make one, actually two. I fabricated the neck about ten years ago. Well I decided it was time to complete the project. Its all oak with a goat skin face. My brother plays guitar and banjo so the the second goes to him. This was a fun and frustrating project the turned out well. I wish I could take better pictures.

    Nice work!

Looks like some intensive lamination and glueing there.

No laminating involved just a little glue. The neck extends down to the the center hoop and was inlet to receive the two outer hoops. I glued the neck and center hoop to the top hoop and added screws for better hold. The back hoop is screwed to the center hoop and holds a metal ring in place that stretched the wet goat skin and hold it tight. The back can be removed if the skin needs replaced.

I can't wait till my brother learns to play this banjo.

    Fretless. . .huh?

How well does that work for sound/duration of buzz/ whatever you call it?  Seems that not having a fret to anchor the string against and making that anchor a soft finger would really deaden things.

Cool project regardless.  Not sure why Keith Richards' opening bars of Street Fightin' Man popped into my head (in banjo) on seeing it, but there it is. . . :p

I like the banjo sound, but can't imagine learning to play. Very cool!

I read all the Fox Fire books years ago - must have been back in the early 70's
Fun stuff to read about - hadn't thought about them in a long time but every once in while something that I had read pops up in my mind
The banjo turned out looking great
