Palmetto State Armory Lower Build

Big337Big337 Posts: 15 New Member
Got a chance to assemble my Palmetto State Armory Lower with the help of SirGeorgekillian. The lower was on sale for $50 I also bought the lower parts kit from them (Magpul). We only had one issue with the rear take down pin. The hole was .5mm out of spec. I called and there going to fix the issue. I have $175 invested in the lower. By the way this is my first build...

I have a friend who's PSA upper had the front hole for the takedown pin was to low. The gap left caused all kinds of feeding problems. PSA took care of the problem but didn't really go out of their way to apologize for the mistake or the fact it took over 1 month to remedy the problem. While I've had good luck with PSA these 2 "out of spec" problems so close in time are starting me to think of keeping Spikes as my go to lowers and uppers.

Thats what we were thinking Paul. Other than this little snag, the lower was built very well. Every other part was machined very well, and the build went very smooth. Now to get it registered as a SBR so we can start the upper

Pushed? This is all HIS idea, he is dragging ME into it I tell ya! That's my story, and I am sticking too it!

@NCFUBAR did your friend send the lower back via. mail? I really don't want to take the 2 hour trip so they can tell me it will be done in a few weeks. What is the law for mailing lowers that i have already purchased?

Since his was an upper no BATF paperwork was needed. Now PSA did switch out the upper receiver for another one (just the upper) and it took about a week.

WARNING: I go by PSA about twice a year when taking the wife to see family in Aiken ... be careful going there, you'll find good pricing and selection which can cause you to spend your gun fund real quick!

Looking good, Lee. You're doing it the way I've always wanted to - from the lower up. Keep us posted on the progress.

Update the lower is going to have to be replaced. Well looks like I'm going to take a ride anyway.

You know I could get you for plaigerism for using my term, "That's my story and I'm stickin to it" I stole it first, :rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

Seriously Sir George or Colt or whatever your name is, Hehehe! No seriously, I am starting to build a bit of interest finally in building me an AR. A friend brought one over to my house last weekend and I fell in love with it. His was a Colt HBAR AR-15 and that's what I want. How much do you think I could build an replica HBAR for, with a heavy barrel? Which manufacture do you recomend as for parts? I'm not full tilt BOZO over the idea yet but I'm falling fast.
    Daddy, what's an enabler?
Son that's somebody with nothing to do with his time but keep me in trouble with mom.

$700 ... $80 for an upper and $620 for the kit w/ everything from PSA

ETA: you'll need to call customer service and ask them to swap the regular barrel for a Heavy barrrel but PSA has them for 1 of the complete uppers they offer.

    That's a whole lot better than $1200-$1300.

This build will be under $600 if he decides to get the 5.56 upper. That will hold him over while the paperwork goes through for the sbr upper in .300 Blackout. That is a 600 rifle with magpul furniture.....

Sorry it took me so long to get a few pictures of her. Here's what I have so far! BCM 14.5 upper w/flash suppressor pined and welded (not sure if that was my best idea). BCM Bolt carrier group, gunfighter charging Handel, Magpul furniture. PSA lower w/PSA lower build kit. All I have is iron sights for now. The aim point I ordered was on back order so I canceled it and went back to the drawing board.

The 300 blackout is still in the works. I'm thinking about getting another lower from PSA. I'll scratch them from my list of folks I'll buy a lower from then. That is unacceptable to me. Take down pin holes don't change in size. Secondly, aluminum doesn't wear down steel cutting tools. If the hole is out of spec, then they obviously have some issued keeping commonly used tools in their shop in the same tool crib.

Maybe that is a bit cynical, but that just isn't a discrepancy I would tolerate in my shop if I had one.

    Otherwise, congrats on the build.

Yea sorry about that never gave an update on the lower. It ended up being an out of spec take down pin. It actually a nice lower. Although I had to make a 2 hour ride to find that out

The pins are probably made in China these days...
