I hear it's what all the top competition shooters are moving to in order to improve target acquisition speed.

I tried it today.  Really not sure how it helps. . .

You need to securely mount it to the gun!!!  Use duct tape…

The top shooters go with a frame mount, not a slide mount.

Your method is better for carry.

That depends on how efficient the other side's counter-battery capabilities are.  Fortunately, this combo is small enough not to need a crew or a caisson, just a small satchel.

They are great for aging eyes.  Carry optics is the fastest growing class in IDPA and USPSA.  Takes some getting used to. Trick is to find the dot as you are extending your arms from the draw.  I usually find the rear sight and the dot is right there.

Do you use a gray tape mount or are you more of a hot glue guy?
You certainly don't want to try to silver solder THAT red dot.  😉
    That's all I got.

OTOH, Red Dot does have a reputation for being "fast". 😆

On A 1911, I would use a frame mount.  But I don't have any on my 1911s.  But what I do have them on uses slide mounts.  And lots of blue loctite

Would you say it is better or worse than Blue Dot?
    Green Dot?

(Sorry, I'll stop.   Have you liked at the OP?)

I thought someone was putting Red Dot in the 9mm 1911.. So I hadn't opened this thread.

The picture was a bit of a surprise.
