Couple of XP’s getting ready for hunting season

Ernie BishopErnie Bishop Senior MemberPosts: 7,923 Senior Member
Dan and I went out this morning to Mac’s Gunworks, and did some drop confirmations, before the wind picked up.
it was a pleasant 45°, when we started shooting. We actually could see our breath a few times.
I shot out to 800 yards with the 280AI and Dan shot out to 1100 yards with the 6.5-284.
The 280 Ackley Improved is using factory Nosler ammunition with the 140 grain Accubonds and the 6.5-284 is using a reload with a 140 Nosler Accubond as well.
My last shot at at 500 yards and then at 400 yards was about a quarter of an inch from the little bull’s-eye we painted at 500 and then I centered up on the 5 inch piece of steel at 400 yards-it was just a bit high.
Both XP-100’s shot awesome.
After this hunting season, I will begin loading for the 280 Ackley, and will be using a heavier bullet that has a better BC.  The 280AI is the top XP-100

Amazing skill and sharp looking hardware.

With the foreward rail/stop. It looks like a tailor made bench for those bypods?

I used to wonder how/where anyone could shoot so far.  Our spring trip had us at Mt Rushmore and Devils Tower.  It seems like you can see just about forever out there.  And I never saw so much wild game as on the prarie.

I don’t know why Chuck put that on the bench.
We don’t push up against it.

I didn’t know he had that much control over what you do or purchase.
    Tell me more  B)
I think if you really want one, you can find a way.  Zee would make a great enabler.

    Thanks.
We do have some wide open spaces here for sure.
I think Dan painted out to 1200 yards on steel today.
2961 fps is the muzzle velocity with that Nosler 140 grain Accubond factory ammunition out of my 280AI XP-100.
Chuck has permanent steel just past  2000 yards.

We all need those special people in our life to keep us grounded.

    Do you hunt?
    If so, what size animals?
If not, what kind of range distances do you have access to?
    Do you reload?

Used to, starting again this year.

Small to midsize game, hope to love to bear this year.

I’ve never shot game at more than 250 yards or so.  I only have access to a 300 yard range but in my new turf I expect to have a 600 yard range handy.

It’s one of several handguns I plan to use this year.
The 280AI will be used for my cow elk tag.
Dan is going to use my 6.5-284 XP for mountain goat and possibly elk this year.
The two Dominators, a couple of S&W revolvers, and maybe a 6.5 WSM/Leopard XP should fill some other tags as well.

    17” Brux 6.5-284 with a 140 grain at 2784 fps for a example.
9.5 MOA with a 100 yard zero for 500 yards

Well so far I’ve only been thinking rifle so .308 would do the trick because I have one capable of doing this easily.  If I was going to start from scratch with an SP probably a 7mm of some flavor because I like the bullet options for reloading, and probably 7mm-08 so the gremlin on my shoulder does not feel compelled to talk me out of it since he doesn’t care for that chambering.  🤣   A 6.5 would be really nice too, but then he’d want it.

A 6.5 Creedmoor would pretty much ensure he wouldn't want it o:)>:)

A 7mm-08 would work great for what you want as would the 6.5 Creed.
My first XP, was a custom 7mm-08, and I killed a bunch of critters with it!
pd's, turkey, bobcat, coyote, whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and hogs to I think...It has been awhile.
Mule deer and antelope in excess of 400 yards, and that was when I was still using a long eye relief pistol scope.
