Ever pick up guns you don't really need? ?

JunkCollectorJunkCollector Posts: 1,566 Senior Member
I do.
Sometimes just because I want to try them.

Sometimes because there cheap and have good bones.

Today was the cheap with good bones. Less than 80.00 OTD. It happened to be a Remington 512.  I did want to try it as I've come to appreciate bolt action tube feed 22's

Figured with some TLC it would be presentable enough to give to my BIL.

I didn't feel like a full blown Enzo or AL fix up just a quick facelift.
Some PB blaster 0000 steel wool oil and wax.

Then me and the boys brought it out and it works.

Cleaned up nice!!!  $80 is a steal, the bolt alone is worth $120 on eBay.

I have the mag fed version of that gun.  Be careful or you will NOT want to give it away.  They are SHOOTERS!!!

    "NEED" is such a strong word. . . :D

I learned on the 510 single shot  - lemme tell ya, anything with that action with serviceable guts and a good bore for under a hundred bucks qualifies as "NEED".

I buy what I like and can afford, not what I need.  That's why I have too many guns.

If need factored in I’d have a lot more space in the basement!
and, I wouldn’t have the sibling of your 512

Yep...I was moonlighting in a gun shop and bought quite a few used guns that came through the door...primarily because I knew they would make great trading material down the road...and it worked out nicely in acquiring a lot if my grail guns...

My other useless obsession. That's only about a third of that wall and it's mostly covered :D

I don't consider it as need, it's must buy. It is a mission of mercy, how can you look at a gun like that and let it languish?

Nice work! Geat some Oxpho blue from Brownells and you'll be surprised.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that couldn't just let it stay sitting there.
The guns been there for months.
I've thought about doing this with it for either my BIL or my niece and nephew's  kids I've been bringing out.

    Yesterday I just did it.
Me and my sons tried it last night. That's actually where the after pictures were taken.

It shot about 2" to the right.
Took the hammer and punch out this am to try and fix that.

The 10 at the head after adjusting seemed a bit high and left.
The ones to neck area I liked the height but still left.

A few more taps and it was golf ball time. I did miss one...but only one
    It's ready to go.......

I was at my LGS when a guy came in with a Nylon 66 rifle he wanted to sell.  The owner didn't want it, but it looked in great condition so I asked the owner if he minded if I bought it and he agreed.  The guy wanted $125 for it.  It was virtually new.  I bought the rifle and took it outside in the sunlight  when I realized I'd bought a Seneca Green Model 66, the rarest of the Nylon guns with high collector value.  So I needed it in this case.

    I'll  get a picture.

I sure didn't expect to loose it this fast......I guess I can at least shoot a few more golf balls.

I bought my Remington 514 for $40.00 about 25 years ago, it  was painted all black metal and wood.
Refinished it and has held up fairly well.

I've got it's brother. It was my first gun and a Christmas present in 1968. Very accurate but that trigger!

According to the individual currently (and wastefully) consuming oxygen in the oval office, every firearm other than a SxS shotgun is not needed.

So my politically correct answer to the OP's thread title is "Yes  and   No"

While were showing Remington 22''s  this is my Grandaddy Remington 22.
    It's the keeper one a model 34
The loading mechanism is just too cool.

It will go out today too.
The stocks on these really old 22''s are a lot less bulky than later ones

    Wow!
They sure knew how to make a nice 22 rifle way back when.

Yes they did.  With the possible exception of a few Rugers and my CZ I think all my 22s are from the 30s to the 60s.

Yes, I did it again kinda! I lent my as****** BIL my 10-22 and Ruger Single Six to protect the chicken coop. Well I want them back! I love my sister despite of her poor taste so I bought a Savage 53b. It's a single shot bolt action manufactured between 1936 and 1948. It's in very good condition considering it's age. The trigger has no take up but is creepy and heavy with a mile of over travel. This rifle handles well and has good heft. I ordered a side mount scope from Numrich, I'll mount a scope on it then sight it in. He can use the irons or scope. Range report will follow.

I don't need this gun but I need this gun!

Oh yeah you definitely need that one for a little while.

I'm tempted to do it again with an old fish gill semi now.
Someone checkered the stock and knew what they were doing.

The next gun I bought after I owned a 22, 12 gauge and a centerfire rifle it’s been superfluous. I must mention I LOVE superfluous guns……🤣

well, I just picked up a goofy gun that I dont need this morning.

Yup sometimes goofy ones need to be tried.

The fish gill or clickity clack was one of those savage or stevens.
With the serrations on the bolt.
