Need IPhone help

RugerFanRugerFan Posts: 2,849 Senior Member
Somehow my father has “activated “ a passcode on his iPhone 6s. Of course he has no idea how he did it or what the code is. We can’t get to anything without this passcode.

Does anyone know how to get around this or remove it?  We don’t want a passcode.

Nope.  And if he set up the erase the phone after X tries, the sucker will wipe itself out.

Hopefully he’s backed up his phone.  If he did back it up the best answer is to do a full reset and restore from a backup from before he activated the code.

    I was afraid of that.

He’s 84. He doesn’t have a clue how that got set up. He get frustrated and starts punching buttons trying to make it work.  And I doubt that phone has ever been backed up. The only thing on the phone that might be lost may be some contacts.

I suspect they’ll end up getting him an old-fashioned flip phone if ATT has one

I'm going to be forced to update in a few months. Likely wind up swimming in the same flood. I can't even blame my age.

Well at least you didn't ask why there's no dial tone 😁

I installed a courtesy phone at the front desk of a school not long ago.
I asked the admin if there was anything else I could do and she said yeah would you put an enter button on the phone?  Apparently the kids have never heard of the north American numbering plan.
Another teacher told me about the time her class phone was ringing and she asked a student to pick it up.
The kid picked up the handset and tried to fold it over her head like a set of headphones.🙄
    That's all I got.

If there’s not much info to lose just do a factory reset and re-initiate the phone from scratch.  All that happens is that it’ll go back to the original Hello screen.  Phone number and such won’t change.  Just Google the instructions.

Thanks. I’ll see if I can do that one afternoon this week.

Just a thought, Might be worth it to put in a code that he can’t forget like 1234.  That way he won’t be able to set another one that he won’t remember.

Can you even do a factory reset when you can't get past the password screen?

1- Turn phone off 2- while holding the home button connect to a computer do not let off home button until you see the screen for recovery mode. If the passcode screen pops up shut phone down and disconnect from computer and try again.

Thanks. I’m about to call them and see if they want to try to fix that phone or just get a flip phone

BTW you can get decent money for used iPhones on eBay.  I make money on all of mine.

    I wouldn’t think a 6s would be worth anything

You’d be surprised.  Folks buy them to sell them offshore.  Rest to factory and throw it on eBay.  Cost you nothing if it doesn’t sell.  Will at least cover the cost of the Flip Phone which you can buy on Amazon Prime.

I’m gonna try to “fix” it. Mom reminded me that his hearing aids are controlled through an app on his phone. Plus if someone calls him he hears the conversation through his hearing aids.

We’ll just have to reinstall the app and sync to his aids.

I know you can get a “smart” flip phone now. But idk if you can download apps like that on to one of them.

For over a grand they have smart flip phones. I would see if you can recover it, if not get a decent Android that won't do that . $240 for a decent Motorola G7 power that I can get a whole weekend out of the battery.

Thoughts and prayers…..my 89 yr old father has weekly battles with his TV. Someone needs to create a ‘Senior Remote’ with 5-6 buttons that automatically pairs with any TV set up in the world.

PS….he doesn’t even mess with cell phone

My son has to go over and fix something on their tv occasionally.

I never did give an update on the phone( I know everyone has been sleepless just waiting)

my parents went to an ATT  store. ATT couldn’t do anything with it. My mother says they did try. ATT recommended they take it to a cellphone repair store in town which they did. That store couldn’t do anything with it.

My father ended up getting an inexpensive flip phone. He’s happier with it than the iPhone.

That's the first thing in this thread which makes any sense whatsoever! Good for him!!!
