A somewhat interesting movie about the building of the IJN Yamato..most interesting is that the movie starts with a pretty good rendition of the death of the ship..worth watching ...

I found it weird that they mentioned nothing of Yamatos sister ship IJN Musashi...

I also learned that the most important person in a IJN anti-aircraft crew was a guy with a stick...

Gonna have to give that one a look.  Having been aboard Iowa twice, I still have trouble wrapping my brain around the fact that, not only can such things built like that float, they can move at over 30mph

Talk about big....Yamato and Musashi displaced nearly twice the tonnage of the Iowa class BBs...80,000 tons...

At the Battle of Leyte Gulf...the Yamato displaced more tonnage than all the U.S. combatants combined...

This sounded interesting, and as I am a bit too rural to get decent streaming services I added this to my wish list of DVDs.  My stepson gifted this to me this week for my birthday.  I just watched it, and thought it was very interesting and well done.  Quite a plot twist toward the end.  I knew something of the rivalry between the Japanese Army and the Navy, as well as some of the in-fighting that went on within the Japanese Navy itself, but this movie really brought it home.  Good movie, and I liked that it was presented in Japanese with English subtitles.  I prefer to watch Das Boot with the German dialog instead of the dubbed English version, so maybe I'm just weird that way.

Thank you Jayhawker for bringing this one up!

He directed the anti-aircraft fire by spotting and pointing the targets out for the gun crews!!

I wonder if he had to qualify to use the stick....

Yes..in one case the crew of the single 5" gun mounted on the fantail of an escort carrier shot hell out of a Japanese cruiser...
