Nissan says it should be in production by 2028

New vehicle should be interesting for those with an outdoor lifestyle.  I remember these conversations from years back.  Seems it’s making it to the assembly line.

The chassis is basically like a skateboard and it allows the manufacturer/owner to change the top from one model to another.  So one chassis, multiple use vehicles.

Very interesting feature, notice ONE pedal accelerator/brake.

Pass.  The Hummer EV is also a hard pass.  Been looking at them for longer than I ever hoped to.

You old curmudgeons are not the target market 😁😁😁

I do find the idea of one chassis for multiple vehicles appealing.  These vehicles are much easier and cheaper to manufacture than the current models.  And by eliminating all the stuff that has to do with the internal combustion engine you basically have a vehicle that does not “age” or for that matter lose much value, as proven by older Telslas.

Notice most of the car is injection molded polymer parts.  Very little metal.

If reincarnation is real, even my wife would say im from the '20s, but i am not from then.  I may be at the upper end of the target market though.  Usually this stuff is marketed for the 25-40 range.  Not 40 yet.

I’ve always had a knack for figuring out tech trends.  Made a whole career out of it in fact.

Funny, unpacking from the move and my wife saved this from freaking 1995.  This industry publication was dedicating the issue to internet access in the future and they called one of the senior execs of one off the Global Accounts I managed and asked for an opinion letter.  He in turn gave them my number and told them to call me since I was his “expert” on these matters.

Fun to go back in time…. And…

It will be tied into an advanced version of the adaptive cruise control in which the car will judge how fast you need to decelerate.

Test drove this the other day 2021 Porsche Taycan. Freakishly quick. Going back in a couple weeks when they get a Panamera back in. There’s just something about a station wagon with just under 500hp.

    sorry- that “truck” is hideous.

Only redeeming quality is if you could program that rear LED “brake light” panel to have custom messages.

    fwiw,

years ago, i was thinking the same thing...

but something like using a El Camino/pu truck.  Have the cab as "fixed" and you add the type of bed you want.  Seated area, flatbed, or pickup style.  But the problem would be where would you store everything?

even a "camper" could be added to the mix....

it will be interesting to see how well it will go.

A house with a two car garage can hold two bodies.  Also envision a body rental system with dealerships.  Drop of your truck body and walk out with an SUV for the week.

    that would work.

but you can also automate the system...  just have a "garage" where they have the different back ends on racks and all you do is to "drive up".  It could also be where you could "back in" a spot and have the system lower it on your frame.  But with automation/vision systems, i bet it could make any necessary adjustments.  With everyone trickingout/modding their vehicle im sure the height would not be the same and any system could verify/measure that too.

So far the F150 Lightning is my favorite electric truck. Reasonably priced unless you want the larger battery pack.

Imagine a Carvana vending machine type setup.  An automated system identifies the attachment points visually, laser guides the body to the chassis and the car computer actuates the mechanical attachment.  It would be easy to build even with current tech.

Actually what the manufacturers are envisioning is a rental subscription program.  You agree to pay a set fee, drive away with the vehicle of your choice, say a Pick-Up.  A month later you decide you need a 4 door SUV or sedan, simple exchange and you are on your way.  The vehicle you are currently driving needs maintenance or repairs?  Drop it off and exchange it for the one you want to drive next.  Driving a red car but decide you'd actually like a blue one?  No problem, just exchange it.

Something to consider if you think having a Lego kit car would be neat, electrical connectors are not designed to be repeatedly unplugged and plugged back in, eventually there will be issues with spread or damaged terminals.  The Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators are designed to allow for removing the doors, but since people (not the smart ones) want these types of vehicles to have power locks and power windows and mirrors and blind spot monitoring, etc... the door connectors for these vehicles have quite a few circuits, and it is not uncommon at all for the owner to **** up the connector the first time they take it apart and put it back together. Good luck finding a dealership mechanic who is actually competent at electrical diagnosis and repairs.  Most of the ones I encounter prefer to just keep replacing different parts until the problem goes away.

This, and the fact that there are very few intelligent young people who want to rely on performing automotive service / repair for making a living, the industry is going to have to change it's practices because the Dealerships are literally going to run out of technicians before too long.

Actually the end game is a network of self driving transports suited to the task at hand, deployed on demand.  BUT, there will always be some that want the transport to be personally owned/leased/subscribed as you described.
