8.6 Blackout - Does this interest you?

Saw this cartridge popping up on Shotshow news.  Doesn’t really appeal to me.  1:3 twist is interesting though.

Per Faxon: WHAT IS 8.6 BLK

The 8.6 BLK round was imagined and developed by Q.

When imagining 8.6 BLK, a good starting point is to think of 8.6 BLK as 300 BLK's "Big Brother." However, it's much more than just an upgrade on 300 BLK.   8.6 BLK is re-imagining "energy on target" by employing a fast 1:3 twist rate (compare to common 1:7 and 1:8 twist for calibers like 5.56 NATO or 300 BLK).

I have no interest in the 300, and less interest in this one. Even the name sucks...

So- it’s a 223 blown out straight wall?

Looks like a shortened .308, but using a .338 bullet.  Pass on that.

No. My understanding is it's a AR10/LR308 version. Essentially a 308 win shortened and necked up to 338 cal. Supposed to fit AR10 mag length and run 300 grain bullets or something like that.

I've got a .300 B/O in Remington 700.  Not interested in anything heavier, caliber-wise.  I got it because I've got a .30 suppressor which I have nothing in and I bought the rifle to match the suppressor, something I think is unusual in concept.  I think the .300 B/O is pretty much a bummer in the silencer mode.  I haven't' shot mine in several years so I might be wrong. IRegarding the 8mm, I guess in those states that limit deer rifles in straight-wall cases only would be legal if it is indeed a straight-wall.  Would like to see more on the application as well as ballistics.  Out of curiosity only.

This article is informative. I still don't want one though.
Let’s look at how the cartridge is made. Rather than starting with something like a .308, the way the .338 Federal does, we start with a 6.5 Creedmoor. We then cut the case down and neck it up.

I guess they finally decided on 8.6 BLK instead of 338 Creedmore or 8.6 Creedmore.

The fact that they have to use a 1:3 twist to stabilize the bullet tells me they're trying to force something to happen that doesn't need to happen.. If you have to spin a bullet that fast, you're doing it wrong...

I will eventually get another .300BO since Im sitting on a piss pot full of brass and it might be a fun cartridge to get my nephews shooting some day.  To try and force a .338 to perform where it doesnt want to seems silly.  Does anyone even produce a .338 bullet that will do anything other then pencil through at the velocities this cartridge could achieve?

If I lived in Free America, it probably WOULD interest me.  I've always like the idea of the WWII-era Delisle Carbine - - an unholy marriage of a SMLE action, a modified 1911 magazine, and Thompson barrel with an integral suppressor.  The idea of a manually-operated, subsonic suppressed gun without semi-auto bolt chatter appeals to me greatly.

Having trouble wrapping my brain around a 3" rifling twist, however. . .

Yeah, it would look funny looking down the barrel of a 1:3 twist barrel but the math works out for these long bullets going subsonic.

That article I referenced used 1:3 through 1:5 twist and it seems they all worked. I wonder what they'll settle on in mass production.
I'll wait till the official reviews from actual buyers comes out. For now, not interested.

    I’d rather have a .338 Federal.

Interesting article, but it has nothing that intrigues me personally.
Even the  338 federal does not excite me much for that matter.
I do like the fact that they were able to get outside the box in terms of twist rate and have designed really big bullets that are designed to expand at really slow impact velocities though.

Reference some of my other posts elsewhere:  THIS is the kind of thing these stupid short .308 and 5.56 length actions should be used for.

    Yes, I get it.
I understand the reasoning and the motivation of doing such things.
I realize what it can accomplish.
It just doesn’t fit in the type of shooting or hunting that I do.
If I choose in the future to suppress one of my specialty pistols, I still will not set it up to shoot subsonic.
There is a certain threshold in terms of distance, where people cannot tell the location that you are shooting from, and I am very comfortable shooting beyond that basic distance threshold.
With that, I do not have to give up any performance.
And I won’t have to give up any performance if I go with a 13 inch barrel, a 15 inch barrel, a 17 inch barrel or longer.  I pick my barrel lengths, and my chamberings, and a range of bullet weights, based on what I want to achieve.  I am typically looking for a performance level.
That means I am not in love with a cartridge per se, I am looking for a performance level for a specific or a multitude of tasks.
Are use the curmudgeon parent case, for a number of guns, just in different calibers.
Why? Because it achieve the goals that I have for it, and it’s one of several parent cases that have a lot of quality component availability.
That is also why I use a number of so-called boutique cartridges.
I agree with the statement my good friend makes many times, “speed kills”

This is the way I look at cartridges and platforms.   Does it fit anything I’m interested in doing with it.  Yes/No.   This one doesn’t.

Normally that would’ve been my answer or response.
In truth, that was my first response to this platform and chambering B)
