Who has them? Any recommendations? I’m not in super bad need of some yet but it has crossed my mind a couple times.

I'm in the same boat. I need to start researching them. I'm wondering if they work as hearing protection from loud noise like gun fire or machine noise at work.
I like Elmer Keith; I married his daughter

I have a set from Oticon that I’m using for tinnitus retraining therapy. They work great, and the retraining seems to work.  They have also helped with work in being able to hear in noisy environments.

Plus, they have proven that my wife mumbles!

I went to their site and this is unclear.  Can you describe/explain this Tinnitus retraining Therapy?

it is using an offsetting frequency of noise to cancel out the tinnitus and train your brain to not hear the tinnitus anymore.

I have had a couple of times that I realized I could not hear the ringing anymore.  however, now that im thinking about it, I can REALLY hear it

Ok.  Mine is LOUD and of course getting louder with age.  Sucks especially at night while trying to go to sleep.  But I don’t know that this would help.  I’m not going to sleep with hearing aids on.

I read someplace about some that will Bluetooth to your phone or other devices. I curious how well that works I can see it being useful. Seems like they worked just like the Walker muffs I have just in a very much smaller package.

Yep.  That would be a very useful feature indeed.  I need to start doing some research on these things.

Mine does use BT to connect to the phone for both control (turn out tinnitus program, turn to speech in noise, etc…) but can also use the phone mic to feed sound to ears, and stream music.

Wife does not like the music thing.  She cant tell I’m not listening to her

    I have Phonak aides.
They have changed many hearing related situations from not understanding gibberish to be able to
understand most spoken talk and most TV since Chean sets the sound lower that I would need..

But they are not a do all------they can be set for a frequency range that may or may not cover all of your hearing loss.

In a busy place with much back ground noise they may not be effective.

If a person faces away from you they may not work.

They do not amply loud noise; but, are not ear plugs and the unaided sound will still be too loud.

You cannot cover your ears with hands or something to block loud sound because the hearing aides will scream in your ears. I once put them in the carrying pouch without turning then off and someone nearby
though an alarm was going off.

You must be careful out in the rain-----like need a broad brimmed hat.

One should wipe the domes clean each night-----that becomes a burden if one needs the aides up until retiring each night.

I recommend rechargeable aides-----this comes from watching other people have their batteries die when most needed. Never had that problem if I charge them each night.

    welcome

just an fyi,...i dont have them - yet...one day.

but you may want to ask your friends/family if you need it if you have an ego/pride to bruise.

My dad was to the point where he had to turn up the TV loud and had issue hearing that.  He could not hear the doorbell or someone knocking on the front door.  I bought a louder doorbell.  Same with the phone, he could not hear what was said and i bought 3 different and progressively louder phones.   Then came the comprehension issues.  He was having difficulties understanding what people were saying...like DOCTORS, friends and others people you interact with on a daily basis.  After that he started to become a recluse because he did not understand what people were saying and was too proud to admit it or keep on saying "what did you say"...or "huh?"...

I had to go to the hearing doc with my dad since the doc requested someone go with him.  What was interesting was that if you wait too long, you forget how to speak and the pronunciation and hearing of the words.  He had lost about 70% of his comprehension by the time i went with him so most of what he was hearing was gibberish or did not make any sense.

when the doc put in some new hearing aids he went to 90%+ comprehension, but i could tell some of his words were still slurred or the pronunciation was off due to the long time he waited.

whatever you do, dont wait too long and if you want, have someone go with you and so they can be a JAFO and note any difference.  I had hearing tests before and so forth, but it was really cool to see what was going on and how bad the hearing my dad had at that time.

chances are if you have some hearing damage, it will probably get gradually worse and you may not notice it - until.

Also, things like electronics/technology is ever changing/improving.  they have come along way with noise blocking/cancelling methods and so forth.  I have a hard time hearing in crowds or where there is background noise and thats without any hearing aid.

if you want, spend some google time looking/searching for places near you.  If you have a HMO or healthcare provider see what they have.  Also, if you are not sure, have a hearing test done and see what/where you are lacking.  Im (really) short on my high end due to shooting w/o hearing protection just for 1 year and that was shooting just 22LR.  But if you get tested keep a copy of the results and the next time you have something or a baseline to do some comparisons.  With COVID and mandatory masks at work and the background noise and some people soft voice,  i will sometimes have a difficult time hearing what is said.

people will sometimes not do the right thing until the pain becomes to great - for them.

as mentioned above get the chargable ones.  They make the inductive charging so no batteries to fumble.  My dad has arthritis and had difficulties with those tiny hearing aid batteries.

    good luck

My issue is cost. Not something that is always covered by insurance. I haven't checked to be honest though. I know I need one badly in my left ear. It sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher at best

2K when i can buy a really good smarthphone for $240 I have a problem with that.

Blue Cross is the only insurance I have found that covers hearing.

BTW, I agree about the rechargeable stuff UNLESS you travel a lot. You have to bring the big charging station with you instead of just throwing a couple small batteries in your carryon.

Your state may be different than Mississippi. Here we have a Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation that will pay for hearing aids. That’s how my father in law got his.

I need to go see them since I think I need them. I just always forget about it.

After a little research I’m pretty sure I want to go with the Bluetooth capable ones. I use my AirPods a lot and switching would be a pain. I have to say I was surprised at the price but it seems like a one time purchase.

I have Resound hearing aids.  VA supplied.  They're very good, small enough. Hearing aids can be pricey.

I'd like to say dang y'all but thank you.  My wife and I have kept denying we're getting a bit hard of hearing.  When the kids come to visit, they're first words are usually  "turn the tv down"!  It sounds like I'm listening to your program in concert! :)  We do have a nice Samsung sound bar!  I guess it's time to start looking.  We're going to start looking to see what's out there and the costs.  Thanks for the input on the ones y'all use.

BTW, do most of them come with a an on/off wife setting?  My son sent me this, then said seriously dad, you two need  n get something!

I am like Jeff.  At home I don't notice it, not much at work, BUT. In a restaurant with friends the other night. I could hardly hear my friend across the table. seems like background noise is my issue. And that wife setting looks downright handy

Jeez, aren’t “wife” and “off”  redundant?!?!?

I lucked out because my FIL used to get new hearing aids yearly as part of his retirement package, 100% free.  Not too long before he passed away he gave me his last set and all I had to do was get them reprogrammed for myself, it didn’t cost much.

I almost never wear them, my biggest problem is tinnitus so I really only put them on if I’m going out to a noisy place like some restaurants and such.  I used to wear them to the movies but I can’t remember the last time I went to a movie theater.

I've got tinnitus seriously.  I called the Tinnitus Hotline but no one answered.  The phone kept ringing.
