Ward Carroll, a former F-14 RIO and Annapolis instructor talked on his YouTube channel about some of the errors in this movie (no spoilers, he only talked in vague terms.) Anyway, he pointed out that the aircraft were much closer than would really happen, language was simplified, and some other technical issues came up. He pointed out that a lot of this is either so folks can understand what's happening, or so that it's more visually appealing. Engagements where aircraft are 20 or so miles apart are kinda boring to watch, according to him.

Yeah yeah yeah; but, turning and burning close where you can see each other are fun fun fun!

It's been a long time since we've had a "This is why you go to the movies" movie. I found it totally enjoyable.

Agree, one of the best movies I've seen in years. Ten times better than the original Top Gun movie and no cheesiness like the original. They nailed it!
Distance is not an issue, but the wind can make it interesting!

Heck; I had some fool put 9 G on the a/c with no warning and no need too even if we were over the north/south Vietnam DMZ. I "grayed out" and was blind for a short time. And for only $750 or so a month. Never got in another F-4 with that guy again either.

You didn't have on a g-suit in a F-4?
Of course I did and did the M1 maneuver as well. Back seat gets more g than the pilot as he is closer to the center of the A/C.

How do you figure that? The pilot sits forward of the intakes, and the RIO is just forward of the wings where the center of gravity is located.
Pure oxygen is the fix, and it also works great for hangovers...
I agree; however, back when [1966] I joined my first squadron most of the ECMOs and RSOs were old timer ECMOs and RIOs and they believed that 100% O2 was bad for you and consequently did not wear their mask unless conditions forced them to.

I might catch it when it comes to TV. The star of the movie is like the Pope of Scientology, which for me is a turn-off. Hard to separate Tom Cruise the actor and Tom Cruise the big-time Scientologist.

I pre-ordered it on 4K ultra HD disc yesterday. Will ship as soon as it's available.
The last movie I saw in a theatre was American Sniper (2014). Before that, it was Rambo (2008). My record for seeing movies at the theatre indicates that it's highly unlikely for that to happen in this case.

Good to know that there are people out there EVEN LESS prone to go out and interact with their fellow man than myself.
I saw Dunkirk on the big screen. The volume was so loud it was unpleasant. I had a hard time following the movie, mostly because the actors were so similar.

That's part of it. I don't like people...
But, Gene mentioned one of the other big reasons I don't like going to theatres. They are beyond loud. There's no reason it has to be THAT loud. It annoys me.
The other part is, it's too damn expensive. I spent $30 on the 4K disc pre-order. Probably half what it would have cost me at the theatre, once you factor in all the high dollar junk food and drinks. Much less going to one of the new ones that serve beer..
I guess I'm a little behind the times when it comes to movies. I still buy them on DVD/Blueray/4K disc. But I only buy movies I care to watch multiple times. Others, I'll just watch or rent on Prime Video and be done with them. I think the last two recent movies I bought on 4K were 1917 and Midway.

Red Box is a good place to buy CD's. I bought Midway for $3.95

Though using flares to "defeat" missiles that were said to be "radar guided", MANY times, was annoying.
