Which AR upper?

Diver43Diver43 Posts: 12,747 Senior Member
Today at work I was approached by a coworker.   She wants to get her husband a new AR upper.  She asked me which was better for shooting hogs.  6.5 Grendel or .350 Legend.
I had to be honest and told her that I knew little about either, but would ask in here.  A while back i had thought about  the Grendel but decided to stick with what I have and didnt look into it more.
Any thoughts?

Based strictly on ammo availability, I would pick 350 Legend. That ammo has always been in stock around here.

    Performance wise…..I ain’t gotta
    clue.

This is true.  Even during the worse of the panic the local Sportsman Warehouse had .350 Legend ammo in stock.   Not sure what that means for the long term viability of the chambering but there it is.

How accurate is the Legend ammo in general?  At one time, I was thinking there was accuracy issues, but maybe the ranges it is used for is close enough it doesn't matter.

I think it would be more fun to go after hogs with a 45-70, but I'd go with the .350 Legend to answer the question.

I've known folks in South Florida who have successfully used 4" .357s on hogs. I would go with whatever is easiest to get decent ammo and accuracy for.

Not like you're shooting them at 500 yds down there.
    Meh.

You are correct about using a  357 mag.  I have done it myself
I really don't know the guy, just his wife asked me which would be better for hogs.   Now that you guys mentioned it, I saw plenty of. 350 legend on the shelf of BPS

Zee recently  put one down with his duty 9mm so the old “hard to kill, need a hand cannon” is BS.  He’s also used all sorts of non mag options like .38spl for science if I remember correctly.

Neither one will blow up Zorba's skirt but for the stated limited range purpose I suppose the 350 Legend would be a bit better. Once you get a bit further from the muzzle the 350 starts to lose quickly.

It's Zee he's killed em with a knife.
    Maybe even his bare hands.

He does have that advantage of sneaking under them also.

I feel the 6.5 Grendel is going to be around longer and also be more useful over a wider range of uses.

350 Legend is going to be around for a long time because it is probably the best option in states limiting hunters to "straight wall" rifles.

IMHO - 6.5 Grendel is the rifle better round because it is a significantly flatter shooting gun,

As other posters noted, 350 Legend ammo always seemed to be in stock during the pandemic.  That suggests to me it was a poor seller and ammo retailers will cut back their orders.

I'd go 6.5 Grendel and stock up on ammo.

Hell, I assume he has already has a .223 Rem.
    Hell, I’d go .450 Bushmaster!  😁

Why yes, yes he does.  I agree, but factory ammo is a must as he does not reload

I have a 450 BM upper,  Lots of fun to shoot.  350 Legend ammo is cheaper though.

I can see it now. Diver's friend will be sweating his ass off in the S FL heat toting around his 350 Legend all the while wondering "Why didn't Diver suggest the 450 BM? I'd be so much better equipped for these 150 lb monsters and everyone would be envious of my beastly 450!"

Tell his wife she needs to buy 1000 rounds of ammo for the .350 legend also, minimum, he will thank you later :)
