Another from a friend - S&W .22 Mag

ZeeZee Posts: 28,396 Senior Member
Another one I inherited from my friend who passed away is this S&W AirLite in .22 Mag.

A trick little gun and stupid lightweight!!  Don’t know what exactly I’ll do with it. But, it might be good around the yard or for my mom or wife.  Holds 7 rounds and accuracy at 10yrds ain’t bad for the first time shooting it. DAO, that bottom one got away from me.

Need to do some water jug testing and see what Rhodes bullets will actually do.
Good snake gun, none the less. I do have snake shot for it as well.

Try that bird shot out, it does some weird stuff with the rifling, sometimes the ruffed grouse just walks off after 6 rounds :#

Well, it would be at “Snek!!” Distance of about 3’ or less.

Well, there is not usually any screaming or checking of ones vertical leaping abilities with grouse, so train like you hunt with snakes ;)

Those are cool little guns.  Very nice

i am considering dedicated 22Mag rifle and handgun soon. Never liked the round till I played with one my brother loaned me.  It surprisingly useful

My Ruger American has been an accurate .22 mag and my buddies Ruger 77/22 .22 magnum is a tack driver with the right ammo

Well, there's an argument that I might ALMOST subscribe to. . .

If placement, then penetration are the two key factors. . .

. . .and diameter is a distant third priority that you take if you can get without sacrificing the other two. . .

. . .and a lot of .38 HP rounds suffer for penetration when shot through short barrels, while still giving fairly stout recoil out of lightweight guns. . .

. . .then a .22 Mag full of solids might well be pretty good for an SD option.  It'll be faster on target and reliably dig deeper.

I’ll compare the Hornady 43gr Critical Defense against some 40gr Solids I have in jug tests and see.

My wife's carry gun is a 431PD in .32 Mag.  Looks like the same gun more or less.  Pretty accurate for such a small lightweight gun.

Yep, that would be a great SD/snake/critters gun for wife or mom for easy carry around the yard and such.

    It’s a °IIIII° thing 😎

It matches nicely with my S&W .357 Mag M&P. Oft my walk to the mailbox gun.

Hey getting drilled with 7 .22 mag slugs in the boiler room should produce a serious change of intent and attitude on anyone.

Very nice gift from your friend. I've always kind of wanted one of those but the grip is a bit small for my hands. Kind of perfect camp gun.

I disagree. A thunderchicken will slam openings shut and institute a duck and cover instincts and instant horizontal movement.
It's boring, and your lack of creativity knows no bounds.

well, if I see them first, the .22 mag birdshot is a “dangitholdstilaminutewillya” proposition at best. I have gotten one with my jframe.38 and some birdshot, that seems to have better effect, but it is MUCH louder

40gr Speer GD from 5 yards.

I ran the test twice and both bullets penetrated 3 jugs.

And retained 100% of their weight.

What's your minimum jug penetration for SD?
    Meh.

Most all the defensive ammo I test (.38Spl/9mm/.357Mag/.40S&W) penetrates 3-4 jugs if I remember correctly.  Some maybe 5.

Just talked to my buddy. He has a couple smaller pigs trapped that he’ll let me test this on.
    👍🏻👍🏻

The far left one and the third from the left are on the hit list for the .22 Mag tomorrow.
Not big, but if I get them quartering to or away, I can check penetration and damage. Maybe hit bone and see what happens.

Interesting results. I have pondered the Ruger 3" LCR-X in .22 Mag thinking it might be a handy little camp gun. I'll be very interested in your real world results.

Got a lot of rain at his place last night. The pig pen is a mud bath. Gonna wait until it dries out. Another day.
