Do You Care About SHOT Show?

bobrienbobrien Posts: 106 Member
Guys,

We just got back from running around the SHOT Show like crazy people taking video of all the new products. One question I have: Do you all care? It is something you look forward to?

As much as an enthusiast that I am, I don't really follow/care about SHOT Show for some reason. Maybe it's because we get information about new products so quickly now online and anything worth anything, perceived or otherwise, will be quickly spread virally. I guess in a sense, I let the online community sort through the good and bad before paying attention to new/improved products.

Attending the show is a good experience, especially when I'm able to have some one-on-one interaction with the people in the industry I do business with. I met Dave Manson of Manson reamers a the show in Orlando a few years ago, and had a good conversation with some of the Brownell family. I also got an opportunity to get some questions answered on a few obscure details about my C&R license from a very helpful young lady at the BATFE booth. Unless someone has a direct connection to the firearms business, the show just becomes a local gun show on steroids, minus any possibility of buying anything!

Just wandering up and down the aisles and looking at the exhibits is like being in the stands at a NASCAR race- - - - -sort of boring once you've been down in the pit area where the real action is.

Not really. It's an "insider's game" type show, or that's my impression of it. Never been, will never go. I rely on word of mouth and sites like this to keep me informed.

Been to SHOT once a couple of years ago. Had time constraints the last two years.
Had a great time, especially meeting a lot of people who I had visited with via phone and email over the years.
I like the video reviews of products found in your link.

    Not really.
Most new stuff seems to be heading away from where my tastes run. It seems the market is shifting towards demand (and rightfully so), leaving people with more traditional tastes (older, more experienced enthusiasts, with more disposable income) out in the cold.
Tactical, smaller, lighter, more plastic, less steel, more matte black, less blue and stainless, rails on everything, more mouse guns, less (or no) magnums seems to be the current trend. Meh.

With the exception of a few scopes, and maybe an AR build, I'll keep patiently shopping the used market. Newer isn't always better.

I would like to go, it would be cool to compare all of the Kahr pistols side by side, I can barely find 2 different models in any if the LGS I frequent. It ws fun to hit the NRA convention in 94' when it was in Minneapolis, I would assume it is a similiar experience.

I would go if it were close by and convenient but it doesn't bother me not to go. It's easy enough to get all the information I need either on this forum or via a little Google research. It is good that you and the other folks inside the firearms trade go and report on it, though.

I do. I love seeing the new stuff, tweaks on old designs, reintroductions, and the inevitable things that should not be.

Plus, the new accessories and ammo are good to know about.

But in my estimation, Gunblast has the best coverage of it from all the online resources. They upload pics of EVERYTHING they see that is interesting- and they do it fast. I just looked at the G&A coverage for all 4 days of SHOT and see TWO handguns covered. In one day of coverage, Gunblast lets us know of SEVENTEEN handguns: http://www.gunblast.com/SHOT_2012_1.htm

Don't pick and choose what we should know about. Put it all up. As much as you can.

...BTW, G&A has NO mention of the Colt Bulldog Gatling Gun. Biggest news at SHOT- COLT, yes, THAT Colt, reintroduces the .45-70 Bulldog Gatling gun! No, I can't afford it, but the mere fact it exists makes me REALLY happy!

I went to quite a few, mainly to talk to the people that were making after market parts or tooling, we'd spend a day or so walking around, then spend the rest of the time enjoying whatever city we were in.

Bullsi hit the nail on the head. I think the SHOT Show is pretty interesting, but I'd like to see more than the new tacticool stuff that all looks the same and booth babes. I know G&A has pretty much switched its target audience to the 20 somethings who grew up on internet and video games, but let's be real, after awhile an AR is an AR is an AR...

I think it's funny the women they pick to be booth babes. Not my idea of beauty. I like real women like this.............

If it was a lot closer , I might go if there was nothing better to do. But I'm set in my ways and really not interested in anything currently made , or made in the past several years. Most of the show people are just phony pitchmen , blabbing the company line. Certainly wouldn't waste my time reading about it. All any magazine article would just say how wonderful it all was. That's what they get paid to do.

I really wonder why we should bother to respond when some of the requests and questions we have asked have gone unaddressed and unanswered? Why should we put forth the effort to answer a question when ours are ignored?
    Meh.

The booth babes are expecting a flood- - - - -and they've had their PFD's surgically implanted. Good quality guns sell themselves, which is probably why the overwhelming majority of gunmakers these days have to hire top-heavy bimbos to hawk their wares.

I dunno. . .I would like to go at some point in my life to get hands on the new toys, but all the people I'd like to talk to will probably be so swamped that getting a word in would be problematic, and their remembering the conversation even more so. More relaxed conversations by phone or e-mail would be more my speed.

And booth babes. . .seriously? No exaggeration here - the first thing I noticed about the movie promo poster for Mr. & Mrs Smith was the fact that it contained a Detonics compact .45. That it was attached to Angelina Jolie's naked thigh took about 15 seconds longer.

I suspect the models would probably think half the SHOT Show attendees were gay for how much they'd get ignored.

well, I dont have a FFL so do not get an invite, and my friend that does takes his son, so hardly a chance of going. But, I do enjoy seeing and hearing about the new guns and equipment

And we gun guys just naturally have an eye for long term return on investment. Compare a booth babe with a Colt 1911

    After 90 years:

Which will still be drop-dead sexy?

Which will still be willing and eager for a roll in the mud?

Which will still be capable of maintaining your most basic bodily needs (notably, continued breathing)?

And never mind the time factor - which will require less maintenance?

I went to two of em and loved em. So much to see and people to meet. I met people like Bob Millek, John Wooters, etc. and I met and had a long conversation with Mrs. Finn Aagaard. I also saw John Riggins, the former running back with the Washington Red Skins back in the 80s. He got out of a taxi at the Astro Hall and set two tall cans of coors on the top of the cab and was fishing money from his pockets. I remember he gave me a big ol smile when he saw me snickering, LOL!!! I also met Roy Weatherby's son, the one that runs the company now, And I met a bunch of my suppliers, whole sale gun sellers I bought from, when I had my FFL. You see things at a shot show you will probably never see else where.

Perhaps maybe we should begin to just shun those whom we know that your talking about, their posts. This could include not reading them or responding at ALL! Im in.

I consider this type of question, especially given the poster, a survey question so I don't expect subsequent interaction.
