There's nothing in life more satisfying than to see your children happy, healthy, and successful.  Congratulations to you both!
Knowledge is essential to living freely and fully; understanding gives knowledge purpose and strength; wisdom is combining the two and applying them appropriately in words and actions.

I assume because they refused to get vaccinated???

During the lockdown there was no travel and the airlines foolishly gave all the older pilots early retirement incentives and most took them.  They are now thousands of pilots short.

Congrats to you and yours Enzo, it's a good time to get into the industry in most any capacity. She's smart to take the training seriously and not just bank on reduced standards to make numbers. Even with automation, GPS navigation, full authority flight directors, etc... The pilot in the seat still makes the difference: a computer doesn't gain instincts and intuition.

As far as why the retirements, it's partially the early retirements being taken, but its even more so that we're seeing the last of the Vietnam and post Vietnam military pilots retiring all in a similar timeframe. This shortage is something the industry has been predicting for years.

Late , but you know I think this is great.

The flight was uneventful, which is what one wants when one is transporting an Elephant.

Hey buddy!  Yes she is absolutely taking this as serious as a heart attack.  She has enough hours crawling inside a C-130 fixing stuff to understand how serious this really is.

And you’re right about the industry in general.  They got hit by a large t storm they’ve been seeing coming on the horizon for a long time and they still did nothing about it…

No, because travel was brought to a standstill.  If the planes are not flying, pilots are not needed.  Some took retirement, and at the same time they stopped training new ones

Yep.  Many were reassigned to other tasks like ground controllers and such, and many were basically sent from one airport to another to fill in whatever hole was open that day so they could do their “hours” even while not flying.  If you wanted to stay, you were at their mercy.

Good for her, You go Girl!

I knew several female pilots trying to work their way up the ladder in the 70's & 80's. It was a tough field to break into for anyone, and females were at a greater disadvantage.

Airlines were not hiring in any significant numbers until deregulation happened in 1978. Anyone remember the bankruptcy of Braniff Airlines, the first major carrier to fail, (1982 IIRC). That provided a pool of experienced airline pilots that took a couple of years to digest. There was a hiring preference towards ex-military & lots of Vietnam era pilots looking for work as the conflict wound down and the military shrank accordingly.
Quite a bit of bias against ladies entering the male dominated profession. Older pilots ( Korean & a few WWII, era) still felt women belonged in the kitchen, or at best as Flight attendants.

I worked with several female pilots during my career, as well as other minorities. I remember the first time I worked with a female Captain (late 80's), quite the aviator, (aviatrix, are they still referred to as such? I think that term simply denotes a female aviator, so no disrespect intended or inferred).

She was as competent as any other pilot I worked with. She was quite the accomplished aerobatic pilot as well. Sadly, her career was cut short by health issues.

It does appear that the pilot shortage predicted over the majority of my career might finally come to fruition.

Thanks for your perspective, highly appreciated.  That shortage is here for sure.  My daughter told me that some airlines are paying 6 figure signup bonuses and still cant meet their numbers 😱
