A big Remington Rolling Block

JunkCollectorJunkCollector Posts: 1,462 Senior Member
11.15 mm/ 43 Spanish is what it's chambered in.

It is a bottle neck cartridge.

Remington contracted to make these modello 1879's for Argentina.
By what I've seen this one is in remarkable condition.
Having no pitting and mostly intact tinning.

I wasn't too interested in it for myself but after talking the store down enough.
I got interested.
Probably shoot a bear with it eventually.

    Thanks....
I'm hoping to score some ammo locally.
I know a guy that definitely had some.
It does need to be shot as the bore may be the most pristine thing on it.

    Meh.....it's just a single shot....lol

I don't know if you know any better than I but heard these had the best sights of any military gun of the time ?

I am pretty excited to try this though

It's definitely that but on the other hand it doesn't feel cumbersome and I can hold on target.
The sights are good and clear and 'seems'' easy to shoot well with.

Great score! For someone who doesn't fancy single shots, your on quite a roll.

Oh....you'll be around to try it.
By the research it kind of turned into a no brainer to try and have some fun with.

Rollers are a lot of fun.  My dad has. . .three, I think.  Unlike the Sharps, the mechanism is a lot more intuitive and straightforward to run.

Never shot a Spanish, but I'd expect a solid performer from any of the old B.P. options.  The 7mm we've played with took a good bit of tinkering with a couple custom molds to get it to straighten up and fly right.  Dimensionally, that one was a bit weird internally - - probably because it hailed from the very dawn of jacketed/smokeless/smallbore tech and the stuff we now consider "standard" hadn't been figured out yet.

I was offered one of those in exceptional condition for its age not too long ago.  Might still be available.  Now I’m going to have to make a call to see if it’s still around…

RB's are great old guns, so stupid simple, probably Marine proof!!  B)
.43 Spanish is very similar to the .45-70. Built a few for my BL. he even uses one at the Quigley Shoot.
Rear sight looks a lot like the Buffington sight on the 1884 trap door.
They were the rifle of choice for many third world countries,  and they all had they're proprietary round for it, but all were similar to the .45-70.
Here's one I made for the BIL! He still hunts with it!
Looking forward to the range report!

I want a single shot in some sort of Rolling - Falling block action.
    - On the old stuff, they are often use rounds that are no longer available.  - Or they are in questionable condition.

I will probably end up buying a newish one or a repro soon.

    The guns the easy part...lol

The ammo is the hard part.
I think it will be worth it though.
Not sure if I'll use black or smokeless have a can of old SR that would work well in this and I have no other use for it.
That leans me in that direction.

One can won't last long in those big cases...  The gun they offered me came with ammo, cases and a bunch of cast bullets...  I haven't gotten around to calling to see if it's still there.  When they put it in front of me I picked up the 1884 Trapdoor instead because I thought ammo would be MUCH easier to find, and I was right.  BUT, I still got an itch for that .43.

Speaking of black powder...back in the buffalo hunting days, guys who were using rolling blocks needed to be aware of a potential malfunction that involved shooting a very dirty rifle and flipping the block closed on a live cartridge while the firing pin was protruding from the face of the block, resulting in the rifle discharging with what amounts to an open breech. While it sounds unlikely, apparently it happened often enough to be mentioned in several period texts on the subject...
