I saw an interesting Remington

While at the LGS a few days ago, I saw a Remington I didn't know existed. It's production time was very short, but it looks like a good rifle. It's a modernized 600 or 660 with a Model 7 action, ventilated rib, laminated stock and cut checkering.

I found a pic but can't get it to download.

Now they have the 783 as their entry level rifle that is actually cheaper than a Mossberg or Savage. Alas, it's not offered in a compact.

I like Elmer Keith; I married his daughter

I remember when that gun came out and there was some big to-do about it in the usual gun rags. For whatever reason it didn't last. IMO it would probably have a better shot today, especially if a threaded barrel was added. Shorter barreled guns seem to be more in vogue now with the proliferation of suppressor use.

Yep I remember it too.  The rebirth of the 600!  Great idea, wrong timing.

Yep, that's it. IMO that gun today in the usual short action chamberings (.308 family, 6.5 CM, even .300 WSM), with a threaded barrel for a can would be more popular.

I never understood the vent rib.

It dissipates the heat waves coming off the barrel when you're engaged in suppressing fire.....

Possibly a security blanket / comfort food thing they thought might appeal to shotgunners?  If you were an Eastern guy in the '60's used to jump-shooting bobwhites and a "deer rifle" was grandpa's '94 Winchester, a vent rib on a snappy lightweight carbine might be the bit of familiarity that made the sale.

Slick little guns the 600's.  Would kinda like to transmogrify one into a .358 Win. . .

They had some surplus from their falling shotgun business.
