It was indeed the Subaru Brat with two jump seats in the bed that each had two handles, but no seat belts.

They went away with lawn darts at the dawn of the perceived need to regulate everything.

It wasn't the advent of the Cradle-to-Grave socialist-liberal Nanny State (tm) "Womb-to-Tomb", but that was about the time that nonsense started gaining considerable traction. That's about the same time the 3 wheeler ATCs disappeared as well. {Insert rant about effete Americans here}
