Money on the ground…

Wambli SkaWambli Ska Posts: 5,424 Senior Member
Every time I’m at the range I’m amazed as to how much brand new brass is on the ground and brass buckets.

I have enough .45, 9mm, 223/5.56 and .308 brass to last me several lifetimes so I just can’t bother with it anymore, but as a example Saturday I collected this in about 3 minutes.  6.5 Creed and .270.

I collect enough and then I run it through the tumbler and bag for future personal use.

Excess gets gifted or sold I in sorted locally or on GB and brings decent money that I then use to buy components or new ammo.  Even if I have to pay for range time I usually make money off whatever I pick so….

Anyone else a “picker”?

I probably have about 500 pieces of range pick up .223/5.56 brass and probably about 600-700 pieces of 9mm and .45acp brass.  I will only use it for paper punching as I don't know the actual use history of any of the brass, but I suspect most has never been reloaded.

I always liked getting to the cinder pit early in the am. I enjoyed walking around looking for little piles of treasure.  Never found enough to sell but I have more than I'll need.
    That's all I got.

What are you going to make out of the .270 brass?
    🤔

At my local indoor range patrons are supposed to only collect their own brass. I see some there collecting 38 357 and 10mm.

    @Wambli Ska
now that you have a bag of 270 and 6.5 brass you now need 2 new rifles.

Ha!  I have a .270 that shoots ragged one hole groups.  And I can always make 6.5 Gibbs out if it.  The stuff is unobtanium though I do have 150 pieces of factory correct headstamp brass.

That box has been in my cart for months… then I keep remembering I don’t need it but I’ll probably buy it soon 🤣

My DNA mutated to where it is VERY hard for me not to pick up .45ACP cases, but yeah, "need" got satisfied a long time ago, and the modern complication of now needing to worry about small primer pockets has curbed the impulse.

But picking up with the intent to sell - not so much.

It really is not my main intent.  Too easy not too when the buckets are full.  I don’t sort brass just sell by the 500/1,000 cases give or take by weight.  People are more than happy to buy it at a good price and it cost me noting but some bending down to pick it up and a capful of dishwasher soap.

I don’t even sell that much or try to profit.  Just helps with the fun money budget.

When I was living in California I picked up lots of brass and have even found full boxes of ammo, always check the boxes that are laying around.
Now that I am in North Dakota I haven't even found a place that people go to shoot. I was told by a guy that there is such a place that he said had brass all over the ground. His wife was going to tell me how to get there but he interrupted and gave me directions, going by his directions I could not find the place.

Folks have gotten a bit more frugal I think. Used to find tons of brass and if it looked once fired, I picked it up. Seldom find anything useable anymore.

Hell, I picked up about 50 pieces of .300 PRC and 40 pieces of .338 Lapua off the range today. Don’t own either.
    But, ya never know.

Not one that I handload for, at least.

My range stays pretty clean, members are supposed to pickup their brass. So it's just an occasional 9mm or .223 that gets missed or landed in front of the shooting benches!

Ha!  I’ve done that.  Finished my drills and started picking up my brass only to figure out that I got carried away and I now have a more than halfway full 5gal bucket to cart back to my Jeep… 🤣

Sako and my range is picked over pretty clean. There use to be buckets of brass by the weekend blasters, not much anymore. That said we found about 500 9mm one  time we were there. We left it there I’ve got piles of 9…

Sometimes I have spent more time picking up brass than shooting. Yes, I'm a brass Ho. Never sold any but have given a lot away to the needy. I've also spent more time cleaning up trash at the local shooting areas in the desert than shooting also.

Any doubts ask bullsi1911 where he got his 9X18 Mak brass from.  :)

Maybe we should start a brass exchange in the pinned swap thread!  Any thoughts guys?  Would that be worthwhile?

I’m sure Zee has a few metric tons of .308 he could get rid off 🤣
