Portable Worksharp works great!

When I’m on the road, outside or just don’t feel like dragging the Worksharp machine out for just a quick one knife job this Worksharp product does the trick VERY well.

It’s an all inclusive, progressive sharpening system that is REALLY well designed, only about 6” long and very light so it’s perfect for the backpack or even the back or cargo pocket of your pants if needed.

On one side it’s a Coarse diamond stone surface and Fine on the other.  They coarse eats steel fast so don’t be aggressive with it unless you have to.  I only use it sparingly on really dull or damaged edges.

Both plates are held by a magnet on to the device so can be removed to work on really large blades and there’s a small amount of storage inside the unit too.  They have a 20° guide built in if you’re sharpening challenged.

Then you progress to the ceramic stick (also has a 20° guide) which has a coarse side and a fine side and a setting for fish hooks.  And finally a leather stopping surface.

You can go from a damaged edge to razor shaving sharp in less that a minute.  Plates and ceramic stick can be easily cleaned with any powder scouring soap.

Highly recommend this device and I have one in my daypack and one in the Jeep!  I might get another one for the kitchen since it’s simple enough for my wife to use.

If you look on Amazon under Worksharp they also have a slightly slimmer, smaller version more suitable for pocket carry.  Looks like it might be work a try.

I was looking at its little brother and put it in the Amazon Prime shopping cart so I could look at it later… and my wife was shopping a little later so she assumed I wanted it and well, here it’s is.  It really is a perfect size for pocket carry.  I can see this will live in my daypack for expedient field use and I’m moving one of the larger ones to the kitchen for the wife.

How does the little one work? I have both in my shopping cart

The diamond and ceramic on the small one work very well (just tried them) but they do not feel as fine as the “fine” options on the bigger one so I think it’s perfect for field expedient and FAST sharpening a dull knife to a good working edge but the bigger one is more versatile for putting a really shaving sharp fine edge on a blade.  I really would have no problem taking the bigger one to the field.  It’s not THAT much bigger, but I’m glad the wife picked up the little guy for me.    And for $14 it’s a really terrific option!

If someone is backpacking and really looking to save ounces the weight difference is 5oz vs 1.9oz as you see them in the picture.

Thanks.  I was thinking the larger of the two would be a little better for home.  Might just get both.

These will definitely help!  Just rest the blade flat against the guide before you begin your stroke.  Can’t miss 👍

For some reason I have always failed miserably at sharpening a blade.
Hoping this is pretty idiot proof😁

I have a Spyderco setup that is very good and pretty foolproof too but not very portable.  I also have several small portable gadgets that work Ok for a quick touchup but are mediocre at best.

Of all the sharpeners I've owned and used these Worksharps seem to be the best results, ease of use and totally portable if needed.  The bigger guy gives results as good as I would get spending time meticulously working a blade at home until I got the right angle and degree of sharpness I need.  EVERY knife I've worked on it has come out perfect with the right edge geometry and shaving sharp, regardless of type of blade or steel.  And that is a tall order.  I've even found old knives that I had basically given up on and tried them on this sharpener to excellent (and quick) results.

I'm really impressed with everything Worksharp I own so far.

Superb machine, just not as portable as these.  Though to fit in a hunting or day pack and my wife does not want it in the kitchen.

At the risk of being the turd in the punchbowl, doesn't the worksharp produce a convex edge with its belt while the rigid one produces a straight edge?
Does this affect how difficult it will be to go back to the old Lansky method?
I bought a KO Worksharp because it passed the Linefinder test and just used it this afternoon. Was just thinking about this.
    That's all I got.

Didn’t think about doing a side by side comparison.  The KO Worksharp is still my easiest best tool, especially when I have a pile of kitchen knives that my wife has reduced to dull hunks of useless cutlery.  And Lord knows she’s good at that.

Her Japanese knives are as hard as woodpecker lips and they take a razor edge that lasts a long time but they are hell to sharpen when they go dull so a machine is the best way to go.

My hunting knives and folders on the other hand just need a gentle touch up here and there to stay shaving sharp because I never let them get really dull so even when I use the KO I never need more than a super fine or stropping belt.

Mine arrived and I put it to the test.
Figured if I could sharpen a knife with it, anyone could.
Dug out a pocket knife that was pretty dull.  Well followed the instructions and that little knife is now pretty sharp.  Will try a better one soon

Might have to check that out. I regularly sharpen kitchen knives. One of the chefs knife that gets used most frequently was challenging until I began using a matchbook as a guide and my barber of too many years to mention gave me a strop. All that is just too Rube Goldberg

    Quick update

After being happy with the way an inexpensive pocket knife came out, I grabbed one of the totally abused small knives from the kitchen.  My wife who is a great cook and skilled at making her food look good, has no problem abusing a knife.  Chopping on the marble counter top is one.  But she then will use the same knife to make a radish look like a rose.

Ended up sharpening 4 knives from the drawer and after slicing a tomato and veggies for a salad, she asked if i had her knife sharpened.

Good for small to medium knives

Glad it's working out for you!  I've been touching up just about every knife I bump into since I got these just because it's so easy.

Notice she asked "did you have my knife sharpened" not if I sharpened it
