Voted Handsome Howling champ 16 years consecutive.
Put down the wolf last night. Had him pretty much exactly 16 years. The sucky part about having dogs. Hoping he can run and bark at the Tenn Walker and wrestle with his lab buddy now.

Sorry to hear that, Varm.  That is always a hard day.

Wow. Having gone through this several times like most people have, there's not much I can add. May he Bark In Joy!

16 years is a good run for a large dog.  You treated him well

Very sorry to hear.  Our four legged fur babies love us unconditionally and they're only with us for a a short time!  Always hard to say goodbye and do the right thing!

I think it would be a fitting tribute to your friend if you could share a story or two about him. Our dogs bring us so many good time and memories.

Well he had a few names..
Originally when my daisy and brownie scouts brought him home while dealing cookies as "A German Shepard, just like I always wanted"... It was Buddy. A bunny hunting neighbor found him under a bush. Pretty sure he was a drop off as no one close claimed him. He had separation anxiety bad
After that , it was Fuzz, Buddyfuzz, when he refused to come inside when it was -20 out and I had finished refilling the wood burner, and he would howl at me every time I called him it was Wolf, Tufel Hunden, Buddy Wolf. As he got older he started picking guard positions in the yard to which the answer to "where is Bud"? was "Position 1" (2 or 3) When the back deck became a favorite OP he became "The Protector of Castle Wolfenstien". Since he had a little French stash, Mr Mustache was used, along with each time we had pizza he would get closer, his favorite. When that happened it was Buderino Fuzzoli.

After my mom dies and my father moved up here, I was making round trips to WVA with a truck and trailer. I came home with the backhoe on after a 14 hour drive and almost just drove past the house. I got to where I could see the garage from the road. The wife had Bud in the driveway, at night, with a hose and a really unhappy look that I picked up on from 300 feet. I knew what happened long before I smelled it.
He and my fathers Tenn Walker were pals. He would get right up in the horses face and bark. Like 12 inches away. He would look away and the horse would snake his head towards his butt to take a taste. Mostly, the dog would realize he was about to be admonished for not paying attention and look back and bounce out of the way. The horse would come find him, so it was a mutual thing.
He was rough on racoons. First time I saw him go after one I was trying to get him away because a racoon will mess up a dog. Well, I watched him dart in, flip the racoon 15 feet in the air, watch it come down and was all over it before it got its feet. After that you understand that Husky types are considered one of the least removed from wolves.
    He really liked Christmas.

The hardest thing about pets:  unless you're into parrots or giant tortoises, they're better companions than most people and don't last nearly as long. :'(
