Cold Bore Flyers

JaphyJaphy Posts: 581 Senior Member

The MKII 22 seems particularly prone to cold bore flyers.  Clean the bore with a brush and Breakfree CLP then dry patches until they come out clean.  My first 5 or 6 look like a shotgun pattern then it settles to sub 2 in handheld at 15yds. Ammo is CCI standard velocity lead 40gr.  Is it me? or something I am missing?

    Dirty bores = Bad
    Clean Bores = Bad

    Fouled/Seasoned Bores = Good

This.  After you clean the bore it takes a few shots for the leftover oils etc to “burn off” and for your bore to fill all the microscopic fissures and imperfections with metal from your bullets.  Then you have a period of good accuracy that will start degrading when the bore gets “dirty”.  How many rounds are in each stage depends on the gun.

BTW stop cleaning the bores of your .22s.  A quick run with a dry bore snake every once in a blue moon is good enough.

My 22's only get the bore cleaned if they start acting up.

I'll clean other areas but the bore gets left alone.

    Lack of consistent bore condition.

The studs in Olympic smallbore will only clean their barrels if their targets give them a reason, and that ain't often.  The priming isn't corrosive, and the bullets are laying down a wax coating with every shot - really no reason to.

A LOT of us have been programmed to obsessively bore clean by our grandfather's era of corrosive ammo and the rotted out milsurps we had to pick through in our youth to find the keepers.  While it's good to know how to deal with it in the event a case of cheap British MKVII shows up, it's also worth knowing that process doesn't need to be applied to EVERYTHING.  For .22's, rust on the outside is the bigger problem.

Rimfire ammo leaves traces of bullet lube. You remove it when you clean the bore. You have to get a consistent layer back in there before consistency returns.

Even changing brands of ammo can mean shooting 5-10 rounds to lay down a coat of the new ammo's lube before the barrel will settle down.

This is true.  Which makes for a big PIA when you’re trying to find a good brand/load/lot for a new (or new to you) rifle.  I’ve had the first few shots after switching ammo look like a pattern only to have the gun start laying down a great groups by shot number 5-10….

I don't put a lot of rounds thru my .22's. Maybe 200-300 a year? Don't even remember the last time I cleaned a bore.

This is the first 10 out of the Ruger MKII this morning.  Offhand 10yds, irons, zeroed at 25yds so I'm not going to make any elevation change.  no bore cleaning!  a definite improvement. This confirms the earlier advice

Probably.  While I love all my .22 pistols when I really want to teach someone about accuracy the Mark 1s come out.
