.45 Colt plinker load??

Big Al1Big Al1 Posts: 8,818 Senior Member
Anybody have a good cowboy/plinker load for the .45 Colt? For some reason it has become one of my favorite range guns. Actually two,  I have an 1873 and 1872 open top.
Looking for loads for 255 grain SWC at about 750 FPS!

My standard 45 colt load is 8.1 grains of Unique for all my 45 colt needs. I’ve used 6 grains of tiregroup but now use unique.

The Lyman manual is listing 6.0 as both a starting and potentially most accurate load for the classic 255gr. Keith 452424 SWC at 590fps which gets you into the .455 Webley performance zone.  Max charge is 8.5gr / 845 fps - figure your 750fps is in between somewhere.

Those are the two powders I was leaning towards! Haven't tried Titegroup in the .45, but loaded some in the .44 Russian!

I had a load years ago that consisted of a .45 cal BP revolver ball crimped into a case with just a few grains of Unique under it.  It was more that accurate enough for short distance pinking and it had less recoil than most .22s.  I think l found the load in an old Speer manual.

Trail Boss.  However much it takes to be right at the base of the bullet when seated.

I have LOTS of Unique and trail boss so I made up 100 rounds with each. 7.5 grains of Unique and 6 grains of TB.
255 g SWC. I'll test them next range trip!

Not sure which grain bullet you want to use but I recommend 8 cubic inches of air behind it 😉

Yep.  I get a case of the giggles when I’m shooting Trailboss loads from my Scoped SRH… you can see the copper jacketed rounds in the air through the scope at long range.

Well, I went to the range yesterday to chronograph those new loads and ran into two problems. First, the Caldwell would not cooperate so speed readings did not happen, Then I discovered I only packed .45 rounds loaded with the 7.5 grains of Unique, no Trail Boss loads! :#
Anyhow, the Unique loads shoot great and are pleasant. My previous load was 9 grains of Unique, and my 1873 replica tended be unpleasant to shoot. I also brought along my .44 Mag and it was also loaded with 9 grains of Unique, and I found them near the limit of my comfort zone!

7.5 to 7.6 grains of Unique ought to be right about 750. Should be pretty close.
