Freedom group, is it a threat ????

DoctorWhoDoctorWho Posts: 9,496 Senior Member
My FFL told Me a concern called Freedom group, is buying up gun companies, he claimed George Sorros is the money behind it, however that can't be proved according to various Internet groups.

Anybody know anything about this ??

It's not true, just one of those internet whoppers that circulate mysteriously. Here's a full report from FactCheck.org which exposes the total falsehoods from this report:

Snopes agrees. Thanks, DoctorWho, for bringing this to our attention.

"It’s true, however, that Cerberus Capital Management owns Freedom Group, a leading company in the manufacturing and marketing of guns and ammunition. And it’s also true that in recent years Freedom Group has acquired many of the firearms and ammunition manufacturing companies mentioned in the email, including Bushmaster Firearms (in April 2006), Remington (in May 2007) and Marlin (in January 2008). But that’s about all the author of this latest viral message gets right."

So firearms companies are being bought up by a concern.......

I did not hear of it until Friday, and I do not recall anyone here mentioning it....

Yeah, it's been going around since... wait for it... 2007. It's been discussed a few times on this forum. The Soros angle is new, though. But yeah, it's been discussed a few times.
    Meh.

Yep! More internet nonsense updated and made worse by connecting George Soros with it...
It would be worthwhile undertaking to clue your FFL to the facts so he stops passing on erroneous BS...

The Remington R15 has been made by Bushmaster since it's inception, their .30 cal AR is made by DPMS..

Thanks, guys, for setting the record straight. I'd been emailed about the "buyout" by Soros and really didn't spend much time over it, but it's good to know the story is internet bunk.

Nevertheless, it's also good that people are alert to problems that may be lurking. A tip of the cap to you, Doc.

What should also be understood is that buying all the current gun makers witg the sole goal of closing them would not work because new gun makers would spring up to fill the vacuum.

There is no connection between George Soros and Cerebrus Capital Management. I think this all started when someone confused Soros with Cerberus.
By the way, Freedom Group announced a few weeks ago it was buying Para USA, formerly Para-Ordnance.

In Greek mythology Cerebrus was the offspring of Echidna, a hybrid half-woman and half-serpent, and Typhon, a fire-breathing giant whom even the Olympian gods feared. Cerberus was said to have three heads, each one having an appetite only for live meat.

So Cerebrus sounds like a good name for a conglomerate that gobbles up other companies.
