This story reminds me of the movie The Crazies.

The scary thing is there are infectious agents that could cause similar behavior and it's not science fiction.

Not epsom. They're compounds sold as bath salts [wink, wink, nod, nod/] to get around drug trafficking charges. It's an analog to ephedrone, and legal to sell as long as it's "not for human consumption." It has psychoactive effects.

"Bath salts" have been known locally for well over a year here. Basically, it's synthetic meth. It flags on a drug screen the same as methamphetamines, I believe.

The other recent substitute drug is known by a few names, most commonly "spice", until recently sold as incense ("not for human consumption") in some areas. At least, in Indiana now, spice is illegal, but not so in some of our surrounding states. Some say this is close to a synthetic marijuana, but the chemicals used to make the stuff can vary widely from maker to maker, as can "bath salts", and this can result in some pretty serious side effects.
