Mom and Dad wanted to see who's been eating their flowers

Six-GunSix-Gun Posts: 8,155 Senior Member
They live in Pennsylvania, right outside of Philly and recent road constuction in their area has got the deer moving around more than usual. Their flower beds have been hit hard and they, purely out of curiosity, wanted to see the culprits. So, I gave them some help. For their anniversary, I got them a trail cam. I set it up last night and it didn't take longer than that evening/early morning (with some help from a few sliced apples/corn cobs I seemed to have accidentally dropped right in front of the camera on the way home from the grocery store) to get a look at the late night flower raiders.

I told them I could take care of the problem, but they would have to wait for mid-September at the earliest. :tooth: Mom, being the liberal, East Coast Bambi-lover that she is, just gave me a dirty look. My reply was verbal: "fine, then don't complain about your flowers." I'm kidding of course, since I'm fairly certain it's illegal to even bowhunt in these backyards, but it's neat to give my folks the chance to see the deer that have been coming in undetected at night for the first time...and maybe scout for a meat doe...errr, get a look at them myself in the process. :jester:

WOW looking at the pics these are healthy oooold does!!! Amazing what a nice long life they can have in suburbia. Cool pics!!!

No doubt. You can see the torn ear on the one in the closeup. It appears that she even has a very long hair growing off of her chin. These deer see absolutely no pressure due to the laws in this area, so unless you actually walk outside and harass them, they will come through every single night. My folks have actually spotted a few crossing the street in their neighborhood (including some bucks) right at dusk as if it's no bg deal. They seem totally habituated to human scent. I may go out just before 2AM tonight and sit hidden behind the shed to see them stroll in. I really do enjoy just seeing them out like this.

Actually they are coming in because of the weather. The dry means that all the little edibles are dead in the parks and woodlots that they live in. Those well kept flowers are a tasty treat. They are used to people there and they are hungry. Put out a tub with water in it to and you will be fertilizing with deer poop.

FYI the saftey zone for bows is 50 yards, anything within that and you need to have permission of the landowners.
It's boring, and your lack of creativity knows no bounds.

Remember the old basic law of wildlife biology I harp about frequently? That's what you're seeing here....."Nature Abhors A Vacuum". The favorable habitat exists-people's lawns and yards with associated bushes-natural predation is very, very low, and other than the automobile there's not much to hold the deer population in check. Bleeding heart liberals who have no conception of deer management anymore than they understand the work/welfare scenario mandate overprotective game laws. Fertilizing the yard and shrubs only compounds the problem, too! But some amount of help is on the way! Same principle....Nature Abhors A Vacuum! The PANTHER population is making great strides expanding eastward from the western states drawn by the over-population of Eastern Whitetail Deer and feral hogs! None have "officially" been reported in Pennsylvania, but you can bet your last dollar that it will occur at any time now!

Thats a pretty tall fence around that yard, how did they get in, just jump? Cabelas has a .38 air-rifle:popcorn: for those "nuisance" deer.

    Woodsrunner -

That's exactly what it is out here. None of these people (my parents included) want to see deer get shot, so they are starting to infiltrate everywhere. It's not until they start losing a lot more of their expensive luxury cars that things will start to change.

The pic is deceiving because the neighbor in back is the only one with a high cedar fence. The other adjacent properties are low fenced and my parents have no fence.

Lay in wait for them with your new video camera. When they get close, go running after them whooping and hollering. It would be best if you were wearing a loin cloth. Make sure to post the video.

As long as you have the camera out for this and you are in costume, try lassoing one, I seem to recall an email stating that this is possible, your mom would probably help with this more humane method:tooth:.

Let me tell you something about lassoing deer! You're probably safer putting a rope around a Stihl chain saw running at 12,000 rpm's! A deer's front feet can be a big problem up close :yikes:

Buy a Mil Surp WW2 flamethrower. Max Range 25 yards.

Barbecue the deer alive, that'll make skinning and gutting a lot easier. AND all you'd need is a fire permit. :jester:

I stayed up the night after I got these shots, around the same time the pics were taken, and watched them come back into the yard from the 2nd floor window. Very cool view - I had one about 7 yards in front of the window and woke my mom up to come see. A BIG doe showed up with an older fawn, which I found intersting given the timing. I set the camera up again last night and got some pics of them that I will post later on.

What's just as bad is a lot of these kind-hearted old folks that live near main roads have started feeding the deer. Putting out baskets of apples , or salt licks. I was dropping a friend of for work at the local mall in the mornings and the parking lot usually had a dozen or more deer standing around in the fog. They're always crossing the road and during the rut , there's usually a few dead ones laying along the road.

Yup. Like Insaid, they won't stop doing that kind of thing until THEY wreck a car on the very deer they feed.

While mkk41 knows exactly what's going on in this area, for the other folks who don't know that the major roars renovation in this area has consumed a lot of deer habitat and I just saw a big reason for the spike in deer movement in that area. In the course of widening Route 202 (the main road in that area), they destroyed a huge tract of bedding cover and feeding areas so they could have a place to dump all of the excavated dirt. That section used to be nothing but green and it's now nothing but dirt. The deer had to find someplace to go for food, and the backyards are as good a place as anywhere, I guess.

My parents live in a suburb outside of Milwaukee and last fall my mom was complaining about an eight point buck that was licking the bird seed out of her feeder almost every day. The feeder is just ten feet or so from her patio door.

Deer do more damage than most any other animal in agriculture. Yeah, I have a lot who wander in to the pastures with the broodmares and yearlings which we don't mess with until season opens but they wreak havoc on the locals soy beans, corn and other gardens. Generally we try to take the does to try to keep 'em from breeding to much but with hunting limits we have had to go to nuisance abatement permits and cull. Sorry but even the 'burbs your folks live in need to cull before the deer population becomes to large for the food resources and such. It is better forthe deer and the habitat to harvast and control the herd than let the deer bomb explode.

Driving through Valley Forge is like deer bumper cars even after they have started a "thinning out" program .

Trust me, if they let me do it, I would gladyl set up with a bow in that second floor window and take a chip shot at one of those does when the season starts. I could easily cull 3 or 4, even without the apple bits on the gorund, as they seem to like the bushes near that window quite a bit. The problem is convincing the suburbanite soccer moms that yes, you really do need to start shooting these things before they end up killing you and your kids in an ugly car wreck, or strip you forest completely bare from overpopulation.

Yup, and it was like that even years ago. I rememeber a female friend of mine took me out on a foggy night to drive through one particular spot that was so thick with deer coming out of the ether that our top speed was about 5 mph. It went on like that for about 10 minutes before we could get a safe enough view/clearing to pick up our speed even a little bit.
