'Peekaboo'..............
Couple of weeks ago Bloodhound and I were up on patrol in the hunting blocks. As we drove through one of the 'cutover' areas we saw, in the distance, a white object next to a pine tree. After cutting the motor BH coasted to a stop and he managed to get a couple of pics.
The deer ( Fallow) kept moving its head from behind the tree to see if we were still watching then ducking back so that its head was hidden. I cracked up laughing as it reminded me of a kid putting its hands over its eyes and believing that , as it couldnt see, so it couldnt be seen.......
Thanks to BH and with his permission, here are the pics.....
" Peekaboo.........I will hide behind this tree cos they cant see me"

When it got tired of playing the game it ran to the top of the ridge and stopped for a final look before hightailing it .
This is one of the best pics I have seen taken from the forest....

I am definitely going to replace my camera as soon as I get some money. It sucks not having a camera.

Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

Tell me what you know about how that stand of pine was managed. That's natural regeneration (based on the one photo) so assume it was cut several years ago to a light shelterwood or maybe a seed tree cut? Pine species? What puzzles me is the flush of young growth in the buds. What I'm seeing here in the initial height growth stage would correlate to about mid-May here in the Deep Southeast of the USA. I would have thought that what I'm seeing in growth would occur in maybe mid-November or later in NZ. :uhm:.
Tell you what......I've got a little timber of my own that I've been meaning to thin for 2-3 years now. I'm going to go ahead and do it and use some of the $$ to come down there and see what 'yall got! Heck, I might even stay!......depending on what happens in November
That Bloodhound takes some really good pictures. Now win the lotto and get you another camera and take some pictures of that wildlife you got over there!

This area was clear felled about 2 1/2-3 1/2 years ago. After logging was complete, the area was sprayed to kill all the pampas grass, gorse etc that 'sprang' up and then replanted with seedlings. The trees are hybrids of pines that were bred here. ( They are hybrids based on Monterey pines I believe) Those trees are between 18mths and 3 years old. We had a mild summer which extended into a mild winter which has probably 'screwed' up the growing cycle somewhat.
It would be easier to explain it and show you when you come over so get your chainsaw out and start cutting.......heck, I might even come over and help !!!
Staying is definitely an option and there would be employment opportunities within the forest industry for someone with your skills. I am picking.
