New shots from the cockpit
I managed to get a new batch of pics in the F-16, this time up close. Not a bad day to go for a ride.
You can look cool, but feel hot as hell from the lack of air circulation...

...or get some air and be blinded by the sun.

Getting gas is always interesting, especially when you get this close to a metal probe that could easily punch through the only thing separating you from a several hundred knot breeze.

However, it is neat to see it done from a third party point of view at flight level:

See all the controversary in the press about the "weaknessess" of the F-22 compared to European fighters? "A slip of the lip will sink the ship". Why can't politicians keep their mouths shut until weak points be worked out :cuss:

It's to the point where I don't even bat an eye when a TV news headline flashed "Top Secret US military [fill in base/weapon system/other sensitive project] located in [fill in name of previously undisclosed location]" It's sad that being the first to break a headline trumps national security. There's a reason why I got a journalism degree and never used it.

I'd rather have my sister work in a whorehouse than own another Taurus!
The KC-135s still do a large amount of tanking, but this was a KC-10. The F-16 can actually get down surprisingly slow without worry of stall, even at the higher altitudes.
Yeah, that's me in there.

I will be green with envy for the rest of the week and probalby more. just a side note, out local Air show is this weekend and they will be flying over our work site all that time. Our building is x the road from the airport and they block off part of our parking lot for the "safety zone". so i cant help but think of you and them when they go by overhead.

Would love to see more views from up there.
What a nice gig you have!
It's a dream of mine to one day be able to do an Air Show back in Pennsylvania near my parents, but NAS Willow Grove closed for good in September 2011. That doesn't leave many "close" options, save perhaps Dover AFB about an hour away. Truthfully, I don't know if they even run an airshow out of there.
Another cool thing we get to do from time to time is low level flight near some of the more remote areas. Once in a great while, some poor sap is minding his own business on a lonley stretch of highway when we go blasting by at 200 feet above the ground. The good news is that if he was suffering from road fatigue, he isn't anymore. The bad news is that he may have very well soiled himself.
The Combat Sent had it's perks. I got to see some great places and could cook a solid meal in the convection over or microwave we had in the back. Not to mention it had a real, airline style bathroom. I tell folks that all of the glory of flying in a fighter goes away the moment you find yourself pissing in a purpose-built plastic bag while standing on your seat. It's an amazingly humbling experience. It's an equally humbling experience to take control of the jet for the sole purpose of keeping it straight and level so that the pilot can do the same.
