Rats !!!! daylight criminal mischief !!!

It was about time for it, a lady pulls in and tells Me "fill it up", and I pump an even $31.00 and as soon as I replace the cap, she peels out without paying !!!!

There is a first time for everything I suppose......

I filed a full report and license plate number etc..... I hope they catch her.....

    They had that problem here in FL (self-serve pumps.) By going to pre-paying, it's largely stopped such activity.

    Next time leave the pump in the car. Real easy to identify the car dragging the hose and no gas cap.

    I suppose with gas going up it will start being that way all over.

    Station here won't let pay at the pump, sign wants customers to leave their card
    inside and go back out and pump. Really.

    I like to play with them and ask "if you don't trust me to pay, how do I know my
    card is safe with you".

    Here in Puerto Rico there is simply no way of getting gas without laying cash or plastic in advance, also you got to pump your own.
    If this post is non welcomed, I can always give you a recipe for making "tostones".

    I always pay at the pump by debit card. In Oregon you can't pump your own gas for some reason. At least you couldn't a few years ago, maybe you can now.
    Concealed carry is for protection, open carry is for attention.

    IHere in PA , if ya get caught , ya loose yer drivers license (if ya have one).

    Most stations are pre-pay. I hate that. When I pull in for gas , I like to usually fill it up. But then I have to walk 1/4mi to the Mini-Mart store, wait in line to pay , walk back out , fill it , walk back in (wait in line) for change (mostly with the bikes) and walk back out .

    The local station I go to is pre-pay , but they know me by now and let me pump first.

    You still can't. Guess they don't trust amateurs to work the complicated nozzle. Fill ups are also to the fist click only.

    My first job was as a pump monkey at a Phillips 66 station. We'd fill gas, check oil and water (antifreeze wasn't so prevalent in those days), wash windows, etc. We also got to fix flats, do oil changes and grease jobs. Had some crazy experiences there but no gas and bolt folks. I guess gas was so cheap in those days it wasn't worth it.

    For those that remember the gas shortage in the early 70's, by then here in PR you already had to pump your own most places, somehow it became known to some folks that if you pumped your gas by "pulsing" the release on the pump instead of keeping an even flow you could fill up your tank for a very small fraction of the cost, I mean for less than 50% and I know this as I did it then when I filled my mom's car.

    It depended on how efficiently you pulsed the thing, shorter pulses, bigger savings, also on not being "caught" as station owners caught up, as soon as there was plenty of gas laziness took over and the "technique" went away , gas prices then where another thing too.

    Some years ago I remembered this and figured I give it a try, as an "experiment" solely, seems it does not work with modern gas pumps.

    California had the odd/even thing, last digit of the license plate number. I was there for the gas panic in the late 70's, even had to pay twice the amount posted on the pump because they couldn't set the older pumps above 99 cents per gallon. For instance, they would set the pump at 75 cents/gal. and we paid an actual cost of $1.50 by doubling the pump reading. Fortunately, once Reagan gave Carter the heave-ho and Iran turned the hostages loose, gas prices dropped dramatically.

    I think the no-self-pump law was to protect gas pumpers, but that could be my paranoia. About everything is unionized.

    Doc, your local LE agency should call the woman or whoever the tag is registered to and tell her to come back and pay the bill to keep from being prosecuted. This usually works.

    The Portland Police bureau is not very helpful, I doubt they will follow it up....

    The places I get gas at usualy have the card thingy at the pump so I pay & pump right there . No waiting for me & no drive off risk for the station .

    Back in 2000, when I lived in a small town (Waycross, Ga), I took the car and pulled up to the pump. So having lived in a mega-city for decades, I naturally went to pay first. When I got to the register, I handed the clerk a $20 and said the pump number. The response was, "but you haven't pumped yet?!" It took them a minute to figure out how to put in a pump first transaction. Almost refreshing attitude.

    Install pay first self serve station , your insurance will be lower also with a SECURE pay station .. and retail cash register apart , instal video security also ... Upgrade your bussiness before thiefs "downgrade" you as their victim ....

    Around here, "Pay First" stations get noticeably less business than others...it has to do with folks not wanting to do business with those who obviously do not trust them...a couple in the next town over tried the pay first thing, but in the end decided to risk the occasional drive-off than piss off their regular customers...

    Here there are NO stations that aren't "pay first". You either pay with your card at the pump, or pay first inside. Your choice.

    Some places/states will give full service (for extra) and for handicapped folks if they push the buzzer.

    Here in PA , full serve is usually 25 cents a gallon more.

    Neighboring NJ doesn't allow the driver to pump their own gas. Had an embarrassing and uncomfortable , not to mention dangerous incident years ago when the attendant came over to me on my bike. I asked him to hand me the nozzle , but he insisted that he had to do it. Well , he was a bit quick on the handle and sprayed gas all over my bike, and the front of my jeans!

    I am extra nice to motorcycle customers...... They are My best customers in any case...... for the Ethanol free fuel...
