Tropical Storm Isaac

tennmiketennmike Posts: 27,457 Senior Member
For anyone interested here's a site that tracks tropical storms and hurricanes. It's one of the best. Looks like Isaac will make the Republican Convention exciting. Y'all folks in FL and the Gulf states keep an eye on this thing as it moves North.

I usually use the Noaa site and years of watching. It will depend on which way he goes after Cuba, right or left.

Unless a front comes off the states, that bad boy is most likely going into the gulf and into the northern gulf area....just my prediction.

Seems it is gonna pass south of Puerto Rico and will only bring, crossing fingers, lots of rain which in the past had been a problem for those that live in flood prone areas, that lesson has been learned so it has been a while for that to be a real problem. Now the Dominican Republic and Haiti are a lot closer to it's path.

Anyway as always, the government, commerce and media are making a huge deal out of this and folks are buying what they ought to already have at the ready like maniacs. I got all I need so I will be home watching the tube as long as there is power and the gas for the generator lasts.

Bruchi, if it passes to the South of you the wind and tidal surge will be higher. Hope you make it through without any major problems.

This morning, all the models showed it hitting the panhandle from Apalach to further east. When I got home today, most of the models show it headed for here. I just got an email from the marina telling me that they will let me know by noon on Saturday if I have to get my boat out of the slip. Anything cat one or more and the boats have to leave the marina. I stand a better chance of getting my boat trashed while anchored out among other boats. Did I mention that I recently dropped my insurance down to liability because the boat's for sale? On the brighter side, I just bought a new generator a couple of weeks ago so I'm ready for my usual power outage. I guess I'll spend the weekend trimming all the tree branches that are close to the house and policing up any small stuff on my carport that the wind might pick up.

Oh well, I have a cousin near Fort Walton Beach and a sister near Hudson.

I guess I'll find out how good the storm shutters are on the house in the panhandle. But with the last projections it is still working west.

Doesn't look like it's going far enough west to do me any good; we could sure use the rain.

Looks like the latest track, 3PM today, puts it in the Gulf off Tampa late Monday and early Tuesday with hurricain force winds in Tampa, and landfall in the western Panhandle. With MY luck, the damn thing will make landfall at St. Marks and go due north right over me! I'm not going to prepare in any way! No water/food reserves, no nuthin'. That way, we'll be guaranteed that it'll come ashore in St. marks, and the rest of 'yall won't have to worry any more! Just send me your donations :tooth: :silly:

Woodsrunner, I bet you got enough food laid by to keep you going through the winter. :tooth: I just hope the thing never makes it past a weak in the knees barely Cat. 1, and better yet, just a tropical storm strength. Sure would be good if it could take a tour of the Midwest and give them some rain.

Local forecaster is predicting a hit on the Fl panhandle, then bring rain up the East Coast.

    Like we need more rain.
  • woodsrunnerwoodsrunner Posts: 2,725 Senior Member
Yea, mike. You're right. Can't be Appalachian/Carolina Backcountry Scotch-Irish and not have yourself and family covered in this department!

Hopefully it will go far to the west and bring some rain to the dry areas west of the Mississippi.

We got more heavy rain last night, not so much in the garage; but, I'm
practicing in case we get the remnants of one of those storms:

My yard does that when a big rain comes, but not as much area is covered. Man the bilge pumps! Batten down the hatches. Rig for heavy seas! Weather channel prediction for path of Isaac doesn't look so good.

If you make a dot right in the center of the red as it hits the shoreline in the panhandle, well that's where I am. After I run a couple of service calls today, I'll prune some branches, mow the lawn, fill the truck and van full of gas, fill about half a dozen gas cans for the generator, tidy up any loose stuff around the house, and go on about life. I've been through all this before and my only real concern is dealing with my boat. Whether the eye passes to the east or west of here actually makes a huge difference in the weather because of the rotation. If the eye passes to the east, the water won't rise near as much because the winds will push the water out of the bay. If it passes to the west, we'll get lots more rain and the winds won't let the water run out of the bay.

I see the storm track hasn't changed much in the last 48 hrs....sometimes being right sucks, but the northern gulf is due. The good thing is imagery shows the storm being shredded as it comes off the islands. As long is it doesn't stall in the gulf to long before the next land fall, it may not be organized enough to pack any punch...just lots of ran and bad wind...maybe a few tornado cells. Either way I would get a few cans of soup and make sure the generator cranks....

OK, Fish... You're in the center, I'm about at the 1/4th mark on the east side maybe, what, 50 or so miles east of you in a straight line? We'll be in the northeast quadrant which is always the worst place to be. Maybe a Cat 1.5 when it comes ashore. Been there before. Kate came through in November of 1985 as a Cat 1 when it went over us. Lost a bunch of trees then, but no damage to the house. Hope to come out about as well this time. I'll loose the farming operatons most probably, and this will severly impact my opportunities to associate with the post-menopausal ole gals at the Farmers Market, but what the hell!

Well, FWIW, my analysis is a direct hit on the keys at high tide with winds of 80 MPH and looks like predicted storm surge is only 1 to 3 feet..... This is bad news.

My boat in Key LArgo at MM 96 is in the water, and the engine would not go down, so no way to get it to the dock and pull it out. The dock lines are loose enough and strong enough, but we will see on Monday afternoon. My boat insurance does not cover hurricane! :tissue:

This isn't going to be a big blow, but it is going to really wet and hit at a bad time. I predict the center will hit Marathon. :fan:

I just got an email telling me to get my boat out of my slip. I just got off the phone with the Shalimar Yacht Basin and I'll be taking the boat over to them tomorrow for a month. I'll probably have them haul it to redo the bottom. I'm long overdue anyway. Having a place to put it takes a load off my mind. All the other stuff like the houses and flooding, power outages, food, water, yada, yada, yada. That's all easy and taken care of. Although I don't wish anyone any damage from this storm, if we get a little scuffed up from this, it will actually help me a lot business wise as most of my accounts are along the beach and on the harbor. After Labor day I was expecting business to drop off drastically but this storm might generate enough revenue for me to survive until spring break. Normally I build up my account during the tourist season to hold me over through the deer hunting, ahem, OFF season but an ugly divorce and a money grubbing lawyer wiped out my winter account. Grocery wise I'm good to go but now that my doctor says that I can drink again, I might pick up a bottle of bourbon and a bottle of rum to tide me through the boredom of watching it rain heavily for a couple of days.

This morning's forecast is projecting it to hit further west. The center has been moved more towards the Mississippi-Alabama line and now I'm on the eastern edge of the possible landfall. Although this is better for me, it's not so good for the folks further west. Those area's are a good bit more heavily populated than this area.

Within the last hour or so, here in the Big Bend of Florida, the wind has picked up to a steady 15-20 kts dead out of the east. Not part of the Storm by any means, but a weather pattern change caused by the Storm. In years gone by, before radios TV's, computers and the weather bureau hourly upgrades, this sudden increase in the wind would have been noted by those knowledgable of hurricanes. By standing facing directly into the wind and extending the right arm straight out from the side, the direction of the Storm would have been known. In this case, down around Key West.

In NE we are having a nor'easter. That right had would have the storm coming from the Bahamas. I think the satilites and radar are more reliable.

Looks like my friends in Mo. will get rain..........finally.

Ned, that pic is too cute. Just wanna squeeze your cheeks..

Fisheadgib, what kind of work do you do?
  • tennmiketennmike Posts: 27,457 Senior Member
Buffy, you best get yourself some water wings. That hurricane will be raining on Kentucky like standing under a waterfall next weekend.
