Folks will jsut accept "factoids" without analisis!
IPSC buddy "corrected me" when I said that there are around 100 million guns in the US by telling me that no, that there are 100 million GUN OWNERS (legally) in the US.
Is it so hard to do some simple math before adopting a ridiculous position as fact?
Around 300 million folks in the US, if 100 million are gun owners that would mean that one in every 3 persons in the US is a gun owner!!!
I ask him how, minors, folks in prison, folks with criminal, mental records, health impediments, those not interested in having a gun, those that are anti gun, those in cities where they cannot have a gun, how all that part of the population figures in his correction that one of every 3 folks in the country being gun owners!?!?!?
Sad thing is that this is a guy with "above average" brains, maybe not so above after all!

Knowing how many guns there are in the U.S. is not possible to establish ....... many gun owners will not say, and some of those are persons prohibited from owning firearms, Your friend was not so far off in establishing the difference between guns and gun ownership...... some people own many guns....
Most estimates range between 39% and 50% of US households having at least one gun(that's about 43-55 million households). The estimates for the number of privately owned guns range from 190 million to 300 million. Removed those that skew the stats for their own purposes the best estimates are about 45% or 52 million of American households owning 260 million guns).
there are about 80 million gun owners in America with a combining total of 258 million guns

My point is that yes there are around 100 million GUNS n the US.
It is something like 330 million folks in the US, that includes minors, etc.
100 million gun owners as my buddy claims will mean that more than one of every 3 folks in the country is a gun owner, it is simple math.
That there is a gun in a home does not mean that 3 year old Johnny or 17 year old vegetarian anti gun older sister Nancy is a gun owner!
When I lived in the US I was not into guns, socialized with average folks, can't fathom that one on every 3 folks I knew then owned a gun, go to the mall, park, DMV... every third person is a gun owner?
Edited to add: Some people have Granddad's old 1911 in a sock drawer and do not consider themselves "gun owners" and are even anti gun...
Not my estimate on the 100 million guns, can't recall where I got it from, perhaps made by some "bean counters" and those guys are pretty accurate, any way, regardless of the amount of guns in the country, face it, some gun owners have one, some have 12, some have hundreds that every third person in the country is a gun owner I do not buy regardless of "all those" guns in a sock on some closet.
AGAIN, around 330 million folks in the US, minors and such included. How many gun owners in NYC, Boston, Washington DC, Illinois and so on?
Why is it so hard to apply some basic common sense and simple math?
Have you bothered to read Bufords posts in this thread. It MAY shed some light.
Do you own research, it is easily accesible. Don't rely on "can't recall where I got it from".
Because it does not work that way, simple math does not account for too many people that will not be accounted for, I would say perhaps anywhere from 15 % to 20 % of gun owners would prefer to remain anonymous.... Statistics are meaningless....
Which leaves us with the question: How do we arm the other two?
Look at the world Bruchi, and you will see ALL KINDS of things that people accept as fact without applying much in the way of analysis. Critical thinking is not this species strong suit. Maybe one guy in twenty thousand (if that) could figure out how lash a rock to a stick and call it a spear without having the concept of spears demonstrated to him first. The rest are just followers.

And others will state that those 'factoids' are incorrect even though they haven't done any more analysis than the first guy...
Don't feel too bad, I haven't done much studying on this either. However, I will say that Buford's number of 80 million is one that I have heard multiple times, from several sources. That doesn't make it correct, but judging those sources, I trust the number. That means that, while your buddy was a little optimistic, he didn't miss by too much.

There is no bottom line figure on any of that, just general Guess estimates....
Wambli has the 250 million, leaving the rest for us peons to divvy up.
