Re: 338-06 or 35 Whelen? What should I make it?

Well Snake284-1 ole buddy that is a poser ya got there. Both calibers would be good for just about anything you needed to do. Me,personally I ain't go no experience with either caliber but I did own a lever Marlin chambered for .35 Remington a while back, I loved that rifle!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I never sold it. The .35 rem. I had was a wonderful cartridge. Heck I might start checking prices for another one. I know the .35 remington and the .35 Whelen are two different calibers with two different cartridges, but the .35 family class of rifles is a good caliber. Which one of the proposed caliber debates will suit your needs better? That's the one ya probably should build, the one that will fill the needs of a rifle you are looking for. Snake have you shot a .338-06 or a .35Whelen? Of course you have,so given that fact which caliber did you like the best? If you have been pondering the .35 Whelen for about two years, I would say more than likely your probably leaning more toward that caliber than the .338-06. On the the other hand playing the enabler here why not just build both?

9.3x62. If going with a 30-06 type medium bore, go with the original! Unless you really just want to shoot 200-225gr bullets, which you can do with an 8mm too (which you already have, right?) And really, if handloaded and pushed what is the difference between a 338-06 and 8mm Mauser? That jumps you back up to the 35 Whelen. And then again, unless you just really want to shoot the 200's, its only another small jump from .358 to .366 :) You can choose from 232, 250, 270, 285/286 (the gold standard here, like 180gr 30-06) 300gr and 320gr. Plus you could say you own a genuine dangerous game capable rifle (when pushed hardest with the toughest bullets).....you ain't got one of those! Plus it'll still lay the smack down on the piggys just fine, as well as the deer, but with a bit more class and history.

OMG!!! Now my head is REALLY Hurting. You are a world Class Enabler MHS!!! Now what to do! What to do!!! :rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

Oh I don't know Robert. My head is spinning like a top. Now MHS has got me thinking 9.3x62, which I had been thinking about before but thought I finally got out of my head. Now it's back,

Snake, I can put myself in the position that you currently feel that you are in. I had an "itch" for a 338 Win. Mag. since it was introduced in 1958 and just scratched it last fall! If you have longed for a Whelen "forever", then you need to "scratch that itch" and get one! I personally would lean toward the 338-06, just because of the sheer numbers of hi- B.C. bullets that are available in that diameter. But if a Whelen was on my "bucket list" of cartridge chamberings, then I'd scour the Gunbroker listings for a Rem. 700 in 35 Whelen and "scratch that itch". Life's too short not to give in to your "hankerings".

Shooter, I love your reasoning. That may have done me in right there. You are so right. Thanks.

OK I called my gun smith yesterday and he says he has a .35 Whelen Reemer. He would have to order the other one. I told him what Teach offered but he talked me into the Whelen. It wasn't a hard sell. Anyway, this will happen soon. He'll order me a Shilen SS Match Barrel. I think I'm going to go with a 24 inch barrel. Not sold on the twist rate yet but he says 1:12 will shoot any bullet they make for it. If this shoots as good as my other rifle with a Shilen barrel it will be way more accurate than the Nutt behind the trigger.

I'm still going to poison your brain with thoughts of the 9.3x62. Its everything the Whelen ever tried to be, and MORE. Did I ever mention you can also get a bullet swagger from Lee and swage .375 bullets down to .366, giving you more options combined in weights, shapes, and construction then the .35 will offer?

I like the oddball Mike. Go with the Whelen. Handloaded with todays powders, there's not much you can't do with it. As I say...... Do it baby.

I agree with you 200% Bro! And don't you just love it when a long standing plan comes together? I'll probably take Dwight my rifle next week. Then it will probably take him a month or two. But it will be well worth waiting for even if I don't have it for this season. I can take it hog hunting in January. I really want to shoot 250 grain bullets with it. Those should give Porky a headache!!!

I'm going Whelen on this one. I have another long action I can do something else with later.

Good choice, snake! The 1:12 twist rate ought to work just fine. The Rem factory rifles have a 1:16 twist rate and the 7600 I used to have was more accurate with 200gr bullets. My Mark X Whelen has a 1:14 twist rate and it definitely likes the 250gr bullets better. The 250's are the classic bullet weight in the Whelen.

Agreed with BBS on the twist. With a 1:12 you can probably load on up to the 310gr Woodleigh's if you so wished, and not be worrying much. It's probably a real good choice if you want to play with the long modern premiums like the 225gr Accubond or TSX's.

Ah, calmer heads prevail. The Whelen is a good choice.

    MHS,

You can play the "x is everything the y wants to be" by upping case size or bullet size or both. That's a no brainer and limited only by what a person can shoulder fire. There comes a point where you have to accept a cartridge for what it is, what the person needs, and appreciate that.

For instance, the .270 is a damn adequate coyote gun. We accept that and move on. ;-)

Well, you could do the .338/06, the Whelen, or both. It is kind of hard to make a bad decision. Isn't it?

Woe!!! MHS just told me something that may have changed everything. The 9.3x62 may be my choice. However, I will have to see when my Gun Smith could get a barrel for it.

....or the 9.3x62... or heck, do all three! You still can't make a bad decision with where you are going.

Well Dan let me in on something I wasn't aware of. He says the 9.3 can push 250 grain bullets at 2800FPS. That's rocket science. For what I'll do with it, High BC bullets aren't a neccessity. When you have a projectile that big around coming out of the barrel at that speed, it's going to hit like a frieght train. Anything within 300 yards is DEAD MEAT!!!
