Blue barrel theory falls through. "BBL" was used in ship's manifest, to denote barrels, long before there was an oil industry.

    Maybe "bronze barrel" then?

We call that the whale penis theory. Why does a 60 ton blue whale have a 1" penis? Nobody knows, thats just the way it is........

Incidentally, its true about the whale....

I kinda figured it was incorrect, but I'm averse to looking up information on the genitalia of various animals....
    I'm just here for snark.

And once again the members here show their ignorance of the ENGLISH language.

The simple answer as to why a gun barrel is referred to as bbl is because the guy who invented that particular abbreviation stuttered.

Sheesh! Do I have to explain everything?

My wife always said "whale, I guess it's enough". BTW, she believes that this _______________________ is 6".

ETA. Sorry ghost, but I think this still qualifies as talking about "barrels".

Gorilla males, which dwarf humans in size, have minute penises compared to ours, no thicker and longer than a pencil. Other apes do not reach even this size.

In some African countries, saying that one is 'hung like a gorilla' is considered an insult.

for the same reason mercury is Hg.

A lot of the perodic table names were taken from a Greek or Latin root. There was actually a great debate in the early years on how the perodic table would be put together and by what names the elements would be known by. Lead is Pb because of a Latin word meaning Soft Metal...The word is like Pulumbum or something close. Mercury is Hg becuase the Greeks called Mercury "silver Water" or Hydra-argyros.

I have no idea about penis length of various animals....But I saw this show in Mexico once....

Well, here is what I found that is sort of relevant on the "bbl" abbreviation. The second link makes sense, to me.

    http://www.natemaas.com/2011/01/barrel-of-history-or-how-barrel-became.html

    http://www.natemaas.com/2011/01/correction-why-bbl-is-not-abbreviation.html
"One site I found took a couple of good guesses stating that the "b" may have been doubled originally to indicate the plural (1 bl, 2 bbl), or possibly it was doubled to eliminate any confusion with bl as a symbol for the bale. Of course these are just guesses."
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer”

Does not matter if this is true....
