Among the elk

Ernie BishopErnie Bishop Posts: 8,566 Senior Member
Joel and I are going to be out among them again with our bows this week. It will be our last opportunity to bow hunt for elk this season. We both have either sex tags, so the phrase, "If it is brown, it is down" is in play. If we enjoy God's beautiful creation, good exercise, and friendship, but don't tag any elk we will be back with centerfire weapons and do it all over again.
IF I hunt elk during the rifle season it will be with a lightweight center-grip 284 Win XP-100.
I was going to put a Leupold 4.5-14 VX-3 with the all MOA ART Reticle.
I have decided to go a different route and put the Burris Eliminator III on it instead:up: I am thoroughly enjoying this optic.
I will be hunting antelope (6.5x47 Lapua Rifle with the Elim 3) and mule deer before I head back to the Big Horn mountains for elk.
This will give me time to switch the scope to the XP.
But, if I get an elk down with my bow, I will still switch it to my 284 Win for some more antelope.

Hope it is as good or better of a hunt as last year, that was a pretty elk you got.

No matter what the harvest, it's going to be a great trip. Have an awesome time!

Hope you have an awesome hunt!! You live/hunt in my favorite western state and are using my favorite caliber, the .284 Win.
Lot's of good custom gunsmiths in your area, and around Glenrock!!
Best hunt I ever had was near Jackson Hole, in the Tetons. We had a 5X5 elk and two nice mulies our first 14 hours in camp!!

We did see one 350-360 bull earlier in the archery season.
He made last years bull look small.
Going to fill a tag, not a trophy, but if he gives me an opportunity I am going for it though:applause:

Had a great time with friends and in the beauty of God's creation.
"Murphy" showed up big time. Hunting buddy was real sick, transmission went out on his truck on the way up the mountain, and the elk decided NOT to talk or show themselves once we made it up there.
Will post pics later that I took

Well, it stinks that their was a conspiracy of events to preclude a good elk showing, but at least you got out there. Best of luck if you can get back out for rifle season.

The other "Murphy" that showed up is that Joel and I did not realize until late Thursday night, that the elk tag we have was only good for archery season.
We went in with some others and did a group application as we did last year. Last years tags were good for both weapon types, while this year it was not.
Had either of us realized this we would of not even listed a 3rd archery hunt choice. Every state is different.
Good thing is that if it had not been brought up, we would have hunted during the rifle season illegally.
Another lesson learned, but I am still frustrated.

I will plan to use my new mountain rig 284 Win XP for Mule Deer now.
Got to get a load developed soon and drops confirmed, as I will be going after muleys one week from now:applause:

I've been bitten by the rule changes before, thankfully not to the degree of doing something illegal, but it has killed hunting plans like yours. This year, for instance, I planned to go the last week of mule deer season and hunting sage grouse on the way up. The only problem: due to fires up north they close sage grouse a week early, so that kills that plan.

The good news for you is that you still have a mulie tag, so get back on your horse and get to it when the season comes!

...quite a few leftover "Cow/ Calf" tags available...

Since I already had a elk tag this year I can only purchase the reduced price cow/calf tags-those are more limited. Is that correct?
    Any suggestions?

...pretty much, but they put out a Type 7 tag in some units, which means you can purchase a Type 6 & Type7 Reduced price Cow/ Calf. 6 leftovers in Unit 129 if you know where there's some elk wandering close to home. Next bet would be 34 NW out of Kaycee or 47/48/49 on the Nowood. 059-6, 061-6/7, 066-6 around Cody, 67/68/69 around Dubois, 92/94 out of Big Piney, 108/125 out of Rawlins aren't bad, a few elk in 122 (Glenrock), lots of tags in 5/6, I've never hunted E. of the Snowy Divide...

All of this begs the following question.

Did Colorado base it's game regs on those of Wyoming, or is it the other way around?

I think I should retire from my current job and become a consultant for those wanting to hunt one of our western states. That's assuming, of course, that I can figure it out.
