Favorite hunting spots

Today I went and trimmed some of my treestand shooting lanes. When I got to one of he last ones, the massive oak tree had suffered major damage over the summer! All thats left is a trunk @ 16 feet tall, my stand is still there but the tree has no branches left, I have killed 2 deer out that tree, one a 175in. monster. We had hunted together almost 20 years... I walked away I couldn't take the stand off today, a good creek crossing is right there and I will pick another tree close in the same area as it sees a lot of movement from deer traveling to food from bedding areas. Any one else have a similar sweet spot in their hunting areas?

Yes, and they have names such as Buck Oak, Oak Pine, the Pecans, etc: that if mentioned
to my oldest son, he could take someone there and find it in the dark without a flashlight.

Yep, all of our stands have names, when the trees gave up the ghost where mine is we built a permanent stand in their place.

I killed about a hundred red wasps yesterday that are challenging me for ownership of mine, and that was just on the outside. I haven't gotten the nerve to fight the ones inside, yet, while standing on the ladder. I took possession of it last year from a friend who had several other 'better' locations...and then shot a bigger deer than him, on opening weekend. :tooth:

I'm not crazy about the ramshackle blind, but the location is great. It's right on the bank of a creek between two game trails, and offers me a view of the trails at three locations where they cross open areas. With a little limb cutting, I can probably increase my coverage to allow for a 200 yard plus shot.

Haven't belonged to a lease in a long time but my favorite places to hunt are a turn in the Pearl River where the Boly Creek empties into the Pearl on the Mississippi side in the Old River managment area, a pine thicket by a creek in the Wolf River managment area, a gas line at my friends lease south of Baton Rouge, La that sits in water most of the time and a certain saddle back in the Appache National Forest in Arizona.

We've got in the neighborhood of 80 some stands and 40 some greenfields on our place and there's too many good spots to pick just one favorite. I worked my butt off a couple of weekends ago clearing stands and shooting lanes and I'll probably head up there this weekend to try and finish up. Archery season is only a couple of weeks away.

I've had several sweet spots during my past hunting years. On my last lease, I had a blind down by the river that I erected in 1994. I had a fenced in feeder and it overlooked a clearing that was about 300 yards wide. When I first set up a blind there there were deer print, scrapes, and sign everywhere. But I never saw a deer there. But I later realized I had gotten lazy and was expecting them to walk out in the open meadow, down close to the river. Then one unproductive morning I started looking around behind me and began seeing deer right inside the tree line. I shot several nice deer out of that blind and at least one hog over the years. I liked it because it was easy to get to and it seemed to harbor some of the best deer on the property. And being close to the river made it an ideal hog blind. Also, wild turkey would strut around my feeder there, though I never shot one, because the land owner didn't want us taking turkey yet because they were just coming back to the area.

About the only place I can hunt on a consistent basis is on the eastern plains of Colorado on private land. That's where Linefinder, Mosseybuck, MileHighShooter and I have taken quite a few antelope over the past 15 or so years. The closest I can come to nailing down a preferred hunting spot is a given pasture, which is very large.

There's also a very nice meadow where I killed my elk last year, but it's on public land, and you have to draw a tag to hunt that unit. It holds deer and elk, and I've even seen turkey tracks on the place.

There's other places in the state that I've hunted and taken game, but you never know what they will be like from year to year. Everything in the mountains up here is so dependent on the weather. They could be high one year and down in the lower country the next. That makes it hard to pick the perfect spot. However, there is a place I have in mind, and plan to have Mosseybuck sitting there come first light, October 20.

Everywhere I've ever hunted either has a house sitting there or is leased by the Amish.....

Urban encroachment is a very real threat to many great hunting spots in our neck of the woods. My grandfather farmed the land next to the football stadium in nearby Manhattan. He spoke of hunting quail all through that area.

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO! That stand was awesome, I had a hawk land right next to me in that tree once.

Maybe you can guess why this is my favorite hunting spot. You can just see my shooting house between the trees over the backs of the two bucks standing side by side.

Since my first post in this thread, I have lost all of my East Texas deer hunting locations, so until I get lucky again, I'm strictly a bird hunter. I love traveling 450 miles west to the prairie and hunting leaky windmill sites for dove, and chasing blue quail in the years when they are plentiful. I grew up in the panhandle and still love the wide open spaces.

...nah, been a legal resident for 17yrs., shot 1 elk every year. This is Unit #58, I can actually see my house from here, & a lot of times I can spot elk up here from my front porch. I've been getting two elk tags for the last 7 yrs. I keep putting in for a bull tag up here, & only manage to draw a cow tag, & get a reduced price cow/ calf tag for Unit #59, which is 10mi. further up the river, so I've actually shot 2 elk 6 of the last 7 yrs. We are actually allowed up to 3 elk permits in the Cody area, & I know a few guys that get 3 elk/ yr. I'm getting old, 2 a yr. is plenty enough work for me...

Yes they have names, in Wisconsin its the ladder, tire, and mile hi, in Colorado its big rock, SOB canyon, and Alaska the oxbow.
