Hey, Muley and Antelope have been my drive. Elk, just never really lit my fire. But, now that I've taken a really nice Muley and a really nice goat........may be time to focus on elk. Hmmmmmmm, already got the elk guns with another coming in the future............

Mules and Goats are predictable if iffy creatures......time to whet your stone again on something more unpredictable.....time to HUNT!

So, you're saying a big Muley is predictable? You should write a book.

I will smart-hole.....I'll call it, "how to predict your perfect wife." Granted it won't make Oprah's best seller list....but it will cut down on the divorce rate as we see it!...all joking aside.....Muley's are dumb and not as skittish as Whitetails.....basic application....food, water, shelter....the only advantage they hold......they know when they're in season.....then they magically disappear! :tooth:

This is the second time I've been challenged upon knowledge.....if y'all cant' pick up a book, that's your fault, not mine.....no slight to you Zee....You're my brother in arms and I respect you.

I had to think about Joe's challenge.....If I knew so much, then why don't I go out and show them how it's done!? I'd love to be with them if I could.

MHS is a good hunter in his own right.....he's earned it, he knows how his target thinks, He knows his weapons.... I'm proud to call him my brother....he's a far better hunter than for what passes around here. He's learned the hard way, and his instincts have been successful.

The best year we ever had resulted in 5 elk, 3 cows and 2 spikes back before point restrictions. That was out of 6 hunters we all ended up at my dads for the processing party. We started at 4am and finished at midnight. Pretty sure we all had pretty much hadit with meat cutting at that point.

Awesome! Way to start the hunt. I got a scope kiss while sighting in my 30-06 but I was too embarressed to publish a picture of it. One thing is for sure, you'll only do that once, I bet.

So are you going with a euro mount? Head and neck or nothing?

    D

Oh, I'm sure she'll bite me again, I'm stubborn like that.
As for the mount, unfortunately, the only thing that came down off the side of the mountain was the rack. It was hot, 75 degrees, and we'd been working on it for hours, we were worried about meat spoilage. We hadn't caped it, so a mount was out. We really didn't have the time to spend the extra hour to remove and skin the head for the euro mount, nor did I want to carry it. I already had a front quarter and loins on my frame pack, which probably weighed well over 125 lbs.

Far left is MileHighshooter, next to him is Mosseybuck, then far right is Jerrybobco.

    Thanks, Snake.

I've forgot to mention, that the second best part of this trip was dinner last night. An evening with Jerry and Paul was an outstanding experience. I'm so glad we made that happen, they're great guys. Jerry makes some awesome elk jerky, too!

At first it may seem futitle. You're bound to make plenty of mistakes, some that will cost you your quarry. But when you get outdoors and you finally start putting the pieces together, there is no greater sense of satisfaction.

It brings me back to life when I get out to hunt and Ernie's comment is dead on.

Ditto on Jerry's jerky, the 3 pepper was my favorite. 528II, Dan is a hunting machine, I am learning a lot just trying to keep up to him. Thought we had one last night when there was some close shooting about1/2 hour after we set up, we all thought it was the other shooting, but it was someone above us, heading back out shortly.

I'm finally getting a chance to reply to this thread. Paul and I called it quits yestereday about noon, packed up camp, and headed home. I'm typing this from my home. I also received email earlier from Paul stating that he was heading to a camp near his home for the last few days. Which, reading between the lines, means he went home empty handed from our hunt.

Not only did Paul not score an elk, we didn't even see one. Not even a cow, unless you count the one I saw grazing outside of Crested Butte on our way home. The only deer we saw were on private ground outside our hunting area. Anyone hunting deer in that area would swear they weren't so dumb or easy to hunt.

Regardless, we had a great time. Paul is a great hunting partner, and as good as any I've ever had the pleasure to hunt with. I've made a couple of one day goat hunts with him, but this was the first extended hunt. I'd gladly do it again. If you ever get the opportunity to hunt with him, do it.

Probably the best part of the whole experience, though, was meeting JB (Joe), Chiro (Scott), Dan (MHS) and Bud, Joe's FIL. That was a great time, and I want to thank all of you guys I just mentioned for the great hospitality you extended. Believe when I tell you it was very, very much appreciated.

These are all great guys, and I'd gladly hunt with any of them. I've hunted goats a time or two with Dan, but had never met the others until Monday night. I lost track of the number of times they told the story of Joe's elk, but it got better and better with each telling. Maybe it was the beers. I'm not sure. Regardless, we were lauging our backsides off by the time the evening was over.

I think we need to do this again.

I thought we were hunting every single day, but I guess check-out is actually tomorrow so tonight was the last romp in the woods for this season. I gave a last minute 3.5 mile high pressure hump into some nasty country, but it was just great scenery at the end. We capped off the night with burgers at a steak joint in Crested Butte and lots of good craft beers.

I knew going in I was going to be playing "guide" more then anything, me and Jerry had both spoken about this when we first started putting together this idea that became the G&A forum elk hunt. But, I was totally cool with that, and nothing short of killing a MONSTER bull would have made me happier then putting some fellow members on game. I accomplished that, and not getting anything for myself hasn't even bothered me. The look on JB's face, the excitement from Scott and his appreciation for the "elk lessons" every day, have made this one of the best hunts I have ever been on. I tried my best not to kill everyone lol I had to remind myself several times to watch my pace. I'm sure Chiro and JB will chime in, when given free reign, I will COVER some country, right quick. The condo was great, we drank awesome beer from all over all week long, and we had the best camp fare I've yet to enjoy (thanks to JB). All in all, this was a 100% success, regardless of how many animals were or weren't killed.

Yea that duty usually falls on the person who fills their tag in the first 20 minutes of the season lol. JB was a big help all season, he went out almost every single hunt and helped out, carried gear, and put more eyes in the field. He was ready to help pack out the next animal at the drop of a hat. May not sound like much, but for those who haven't done it, packing out a 500+lbs animal from 10k ft elevation is no easy task and nothing to look forward to. His food was top notch, and if I ever get the chance to share a camp with him again I'm going to make it a priority to make sure his tag is filled first lol
