Tactical pen recommendation

FL180FL180 Posts: 58 Member
I'm looking into buying a tactical pen and am looking for some recommendations. I've done a little research and some of the features I think I'm interested in are:

A twist function to use the pen. Don't think I want a removable cap, either screw type or click type, as I plan on using the pen part regularly and don't want to have a loose cap to worry about or loosing part of the pen during a self defense scenario.

A pointed end, not worried about a "DNA catcher" but if it had one in addition to a pointed end, that would be fine.

Good quality

Good grip

I've seen some of the S&W models and some from UZI. Most had some of the qualities I'm looking for but not all. What else should I look at? What do you use and why is it a good choice? I not interested in spending a small fortune either. I'm looking in the ballpark of $30.

Thanks!

WTH is a "tactical" pen? Does it have a tiny poison gas canister in it, a la James Bond?

Why not just carry an ice pick?

Tactical pens are solid steel pens that are intended for Everyday carry when and where you cant have a knife or gun. Got a kershaw knife/light/pen combo at walmart for $20. has all the exact features you're looking for. -Kyle
P.S. Also has glass breaker tip.

Ah, I see. Do you need an operator's license to carry one?

Dont think so. Here in MI at least im no lawyer but to me its just a heavy steel pen. Therefore not realy a dengerous weapon. Its used more as a last ditch thing. Not for killing but jabbing and stabbing to get the hell outa dodge.

Don't go crazy with the glass breaking tip. When you learn how easy it is to break tempered window glass, you realize a regular ball point pen would do the job just right.

Ha ha ha... I'm not the one that decided to call these things "tactical", that's just what they are called.

My job requires me to go through airport security multiple times a week and spend several nights in different cities in hotels. I can't bring a traditional self defense weapon of any sort with me so this is a compromise I can use while walking to/from the hotel and dinner. I also bring a very bright and sturdy flashlight that I could also use to defend myself. A "tactical pen" seems like a great option for me since I also do a lot of signing my name, ect...

    Anyway, thanks for the recommendations.

I'm not sure, but I'm a little dubious about it being mightier than a sword.

I'm looking for a 'tactical' scotch tape dispenser.

I'll see your tactical tape despenser and raise you a gas operated stapler. I'm just hoping you don't have a ballistic staple remover. I guess that's why Office Depot works so well. :silly: Later,

Walmart has a Kershaw set with the pen, knife and an el heaps flashlight for $20 right now. Picked one up tonight just in case Santa missed out on the deal but I can't open it until Christmas.

I actually read a similar thread on another forum and then read this one. I popped back into his one on my phone when I got home from work and still had the other browser open. So now he knows about it twice and the poor guy on the other forum doesn't know where to look. Must be getting too senile in my old age to handle 2 browser windows at once. I should go let he other guy know about the pen now lol

Hmmm. . .would a Tactical Paperclip double as a carabiner for rappelling? I've been thinking about a Tactical Necktie that can latch onto a single-point AR-15 sling adapter. . .

I guess tactical pen i squit a useful and effective tooln for a self- defense and security purpose. As it has some interesting features in it which is really helpful. And on the other hand it's also easy to keep, carry and use. No problem what-so-ever.

OK, I get it... Y'all are obviously part of the "I'm anti anything that has the word 'tactical' in its description and anyone that has or wants anything 'tactical' is a wannabe SWAT team member that plays too much 'Call of Duty'" group.

Forget I asked. Besides, I just bought the new Black Ops game for my XBox so I gotta go gear out for a hard core all day and night marathon of that! Yeah! :cool2:

These are tactical pens, people don't freak when they see them and the ones of metal construction can do good damage to the face and neck in short order. (fine christmas gift also)

This style of pen is only tactical if no one sees it before you need it.

Yes but can a mafia hit qualify as tactical? I was thinking more of a Jason Bourne knife vs pen fight scenario myself. By the way I disqualify that pen as being tactical on the basis of it lacking at least one picatinny rail. :jester:

Here's a better option than the pen, and it's pretty likely to slide right through the screening process:

You get caught with pen, they make you leave it. They catch you with blade, you go to jail.

Just jab an old plactic Bic pen through the spyder, clover, spider web or obsene verbage on the neck of the thug that grabs you and leave or go for your carry gun. If carry gun is already in your hand save the Bic pen and continue like normal. Once pen is inserted pulling back or pushing forward wil enhance the effect. Yes your honor, in fear of my life I swung my arm and the pen in my hand must have punctured the persons neck allowing me to flee. OOPs! Later,

You don't need much but a little knowledge to break tempered auto glass. Ive done it with my bare hands (no gloves) before with out the first cut. I've used a car antenna to completely clear a window before. Here is a good example. Most of the time these gimicks for glass punches are made up by people who are looking to make money. Sure I carry a punch because it's something I may have to do every day, but in an emergency believe me, I'm not wasting time looking for something to break out glass!

Grandma had a 22 caliber pen.

Lots of knives, black jacks, scissors, screwdrivers and so on, she worked at a pharmacy and had a gift for taking weapons from drunks and street thugs without them noticing.

You'd be amazed how much stuff that's "not allowed" easily slips through airport screening.

Guy I knew just days after 9-11 took a ceramic knife from PR to NYC, both ways, in his carry on, stuck the blade on a tub of toothpaste.

I get your need. Like I said I even looked for myself for the same reason. I'm just afraid that with the way they look they will be on the next list of banned items and I'll just be donating it to the next La Guardia non-english speaking TSA guy that decides he likes it.

I wouldn't get a branded one for that reason. If it has Surefire emblazened across it, then it's kinda hard to argue you didn't know it could be used as a weapon....

Can you get the pens at KGB surplus? The flash light looks like new technoligy. I guess using smaller bullets is effective if they are poison as well. :yikes: Later,
