If I wanted to acquire some steel gongs that could withstand .223 and .308 (and similar) out to 500 yards, what should I plan on spending and where should I look?

I want to get 3-4 gongs of various sizes and set them up on the 200 and 500 yard lines at the local private range that the family belongs to.

One of the best targets I've used for portability.

I actually use the 12" version. But, this 10" one might better suit you. It's pretty affordable for as compact, durable, and practical as they are.

For on the go, I've not used a better one.

Matt, remember the plates I took to the SE shoot? A few months back there was a thread like yours and I posted pics and explained how I made them and what they cost. Wedeners was the least expensive place to buy them and they have quite a variety to choose from. The ones I have are 3/8" thick and they can handle any caliber but no ball ammo. They also have them in 1/2 thick plate. I had four of them at the shoot and all anyone did was take the paint off of them and they were hit alot with quite a few different calibers.

All the steel targets recommended are great but pricey both on cost and shipping, if you are the thrifty kind do a search on ebay for AR 500, it is the type of metal grade you NEED to withstand 223 and up, many sellers on ebay will even send you as many as they fit in a USPS flat rate box. I got an 8" auto reset one on ebay for around $100 shipping included.

They'll be back next year with heavier gage chains. I plan on having a few more of them next year also. The plates did come in a flat rate box and all four of mine together cost less than the Caldwell one.
